Wales 0 - 1 Costa Rica: Gary Speed tribute night ends in narrow defeat

Published on Thursday 1 March 2012 04:54

WALES were unable to mark the Gary Speed Memorial Match with a victory as Joel Campbell’s early goal gave Costa Rica the win on an emotional night at Cardiff City Stadium.

Campbell, on loan at Lorient from Arsenal, scored the only goal in the seventh minute as he calmly slotted home from Bryan Ruiz’s superb pass.

Striker Steve Morison went closest to an equaliser for Wales as his first-half header struck the bar before landing on the line and being cleared, while captain Craig Bellamy and Hal Robson-Kanu also had chances on a night when the principality remembered one of its most cherished figures.

It was always going to be a difficult night for the Wales players and management given the nature of the occasion as they remembered their former manager.

Speed’s sons Ed and Tom led the side out along with captain for the night Craig Bellamy and Aaron Ramsey. At one end of the ground cards were held aloft to reveal the name “Gary” on the background of a Welsh flag as the anthem was played with a solemn Bellamy arm in arm with his late friend’s sons, while a minute’s applause was also held in honour of Speed and two spontaneous standing ovations took place during the 90 minutes.

Wales’ hopes of marking the occasion with a win were not helped by the absence of Ramsey, Wayne Hennessey and Gareth Bale. The Spurs man being a late withdrawal with a hamstring problem.

And the home crowd were stunned into silence when Costa Rica took the lead.

Ruiz was instrumental in the goal as his perfectly-weighted pass picked out Campbell’s run, and the striker calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

Bellamy lofted an effort over as Wales sought a response but the threatening Campbell almost grabbed a second.

The home side did manage to raise the noise levels as Costa Rica keeper Keylor Navas beat away a Chris Gunter cross and Steve Morison’s header hit the bar and land on the line before being cleared.

An extended half-time break then saw almost 50 former Wales internationals, including Ryan Giggs and Mark Hughes, take to the field, along with WBO light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly, to pay tribute to Speed. And Wales came out with a renewed vigour, with Bellamy at the heart of many of their better moments.

They were firmly on top territorially but couldn’t score and Bellamy was withdrawn for Robert Earnshaw and given a warm ovation by the crowd as he left the field for possibly the last time in a Wales shirt.

Earnshaw thought he had found an equaliser in the dying stages but it was ruled out for offside.

Airdrie as the Diamonds hit back to grab a draw through substitute John Boyle.

The Red Lichties started the game well, and midfielder Keith Gibson was perfectly placed to head home a cross from player/ manager Paul Sheerin to give them the lead after just nine minutes. The second goal came three minutes from the break when Brain Kerr set up Gibson to rifle in a fine drive.

The match turned just after half-time when Airdrie striker Derek Holmes headed in and Holmes played a part in the equaliser that came 12 minutes from time.

The big front man headed into the path of Boyle, who had only been on the park for three minutes, and he sent a right shot past Darren Hill to level.

Kirk Broadfoot: Heat still on

Published on Thursday 1 March 2012 04:47

Kirk Broadfoot has admitted the SPL title race is “as good as finished”, but the full-back insists there is no less pressure on Rangers to deliver results between now and the end of the season.

The champions trail leaders Celtic by 20 points after being docked ten points when they were forced into administration on 14 February, but Broadfoot said: “I don’t think there’s any less pressure because of the circumstances. We are always expected to win, no matter who we play.”

Even finishing second in the SPL does not guarantee European football next term and the club must be out of administration and submit audited accounts by 31 March to secure a Uefa licence.

But Broadfoot added: “Even if we’re not able to play in Europe, we still want to be as high up the league as we can.”

Stark says under-21 side ‘stood up to the Dutch test’

Published on Thursday 1 March 2012 04:58

SCOTLAND under-21 manager Billy Stark was pleased his side maintained their unbeaten run with a goal-less draw against Group 10 leaders Holland, but admits qualifying for the European Championships remains a challenging task.

Stark’s side more than held their own against the group pacesetters, staying a point behind having taken four points out of six from the Dutch during the campaign, including a 2-1 win in Nijmegen last November.

In a match of few clear-cut chances at St Mirren Park, Johnny Russell was denied midway through the second half as Scotland missed the chance to go top of the group with matches against Bulgaria, Luxembourg and Austria to follow.

Stark said: “We’ve played five games and that includes two games against the Dutch. Four points from them is quite a good return.

“At the beginning we knew it was going to be a really difficult task to qualify from the group. We’re competing fully. What we have to try to do is instil confidence to play.

“Whilst that wasn’t as much in evidence in the first half, I thought in the second half we looked really threatening and that’s against a team that’s a world power, particularly at under-21 level. They’re famed for their youth production line. Tonight it was one of those games we could’ve won or could’ve lost. We were consistently tested defensively and we stood up to that and we still produced moments that could’ve produced a goal that unfortunately just didn’t get the final touch on.”

With the ten group winners and four leading runners-up advancing to a play-off – with seven teams to join hosts Israel at the 2013 finals – Scotland remain in pursuit of Holland and with a chance of advancing.

However, it could have been better as Dundee United forward Russell was played through by substitute Scott Allan, but Dutch goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet was equal to the shot. Stark added: “That was probably the chance of the game – a great pass to put him in and you’ve got to give the goalkeeper credit. On another day he’ll finish.”

Stark praised his side for their patience, with prolific striker Jordan Rhodes ploughing a lone furrow up front while marked tightly by the Dutch defence. “I expected them to dominate possession, because that’s the way they’ve played for many years,” he said. “They had to make sure they didn’t get drawn into a really negative way of thinking because the other team had all the ball.

“They didn’t create that many chances. Just before half-time the boy [Leandro Bacuna] got a full-blooded effort he probably would have scored if his team-mate hadn’t got in the road.”

Craig Levein delight at ‘excellent result’ as Scots battle to draw in Slovenia

By ALAN PATTULLO
Published on Thursday 1 March 2012 05:38

Craig Levein described last night’s sharing of the spoils with Slovenia as another significant step in the right direction.

Christope Berra’s 40th minute header cancelled out Andraz Kirm’s opener seven minutes earlier, scored also with his head, and gave Levein the kind of result he would have been delighted to achieve had it come in a competitive context.

Even though there was not a qualifying point to be gained from the 1-1 draw, the manager still regarded it as a highly satisfying night’s work at the Bonifika stadium in Koper. He described the performance of the lively James Forrest as the “prize” to be taken from the evening.

Levein knows that a draw in Slovenia is a notable achievement ahead of qualifiers for the World Cup finals in Brazil beginning in September. The opposition were selected in order to provide Scotland with experience of playing a team from south-east Europe, with games against Croatia, Macedonia and Serbia to come. “Overall it is an excellent result,” said Levein. “I know it’s only a friendly game. But it is important we keep improving.

“In the first hour of the game, I thought we did well. When both teams start to make a number of substitution it does affect the flow of the game. In the last half hour, certainly from our point of view, we dropped our level of performance.”

Levein made special mention of the younger players who featured last night against an experienced Slovenian team, and also praised the contribution from debutant Charlie Mulgrew. The Celtic defender was at fault for the first goal when he went to ground when challenging Miso Brecko, whose cross to the back post created the opener.

Russell Martin, playing in only his second game, was then beaten in the air by Kirm. However, Levein dismissed fears about their involvement in this phase of play, and described both Mulgrew and Martin as welcome additions to an ever-improving squad.

“The two full backs stepped in at the last minute and I thought they were both excellent,” said Levein. “These things happen. It’s a test of character. It’s a test of the players’ mental capabilities to get back into the game. Towards the end of the game we were under pressure from Slovenia and they made some great blocks.”

Levein reserved his highest praise for Forrest, who contributed another eye-catching display. He had been promoted to the top squad despite last night’s under-21 clash with the Netherlands at St Mirren Park, but Levein believes this decision was justified as the winger made another great stride towards becoming an automatic selection for Scotland.

“I did feel a bit for Starky [Billy Stark, the under 21 manager],” he said. “He [Forrest] was he best player for the under 21s in their last game against Holland. Taking him away denied Billy the opportunity to use him. They got a fantastic result tonight – 0-0. Maybe James staying with the under 21s might have helped improve that result. But, ultimately, as you can see from tonight’s performance, he is going to be playing with the national team, not the under-21s. The more game time he gets the better.”

“Perhaps the one who did his cause absolutely no harm whatsoever was young Forrest,” he added. “The prize for me tonight was his performance. It also very much justified taking him with us rather than leaving him to play with the under-21s. He has played a lot of big games for Celtic. That is the equivalent of playing international football. I didn’t expect anything else but a decent performance – but he probably surpassed that.

“It’s not just about him,” continued Levein. “I thought there were a lot of special performances tonight. The motto is keep improving. And hopefully by September we are ready to go.”

Given the proximity of the World Cup qualifiers, which kick off against Serbia in September, Levein knows that everything must be viewed in their context. “A lot of things make it worthwhile coming here,” he said. “If I have problems in midfield and James McArthur needs to play for me in Serbia, and Charlie Mulgrew and Russell Martin need to play, then they have some experience they did not have before this match. It’s a chance to bring them in and integrate them into the squad. There are a lot of positives. It’s been a worthwhile exercise.”

“I look through the team and see exciting players. And we are getting better. That, to me, is the important thing.

“I know we only have two more games to play before September. But coming away from home in a situation like this and not losing the game is important.”

Levein also acknowledged the Scotland supporters, who gathered in Slovenia in their usual healthy numbers.

“They are brilliant. They follow us everywhere. They are really vocal and the encouragement they give the players is fantastic. I am hoping they have seen enough tonight to make their journey seem worthwhile. When it comes down to it, it is all about what happens in September.”

Scotland U21 0 - 0 Netherlands U21: Young Scots on technical terms with Dutch

IT WASN’T bad, could have been better but, ultimately, was all that it deserved to be. The point hard-earned by Scotland under-21s against the Netherlands last night doesn’t do an awful lot for their qualification hopes.

But it would be churlish to be down on their efforts when they were ranged against a nation considered among the most technically proficient on the planet. In that context, what was notable was that which was absent. For there was no skills gap between the Dutch and their hosts. The evenly-matched nature of the sides, indeed, reinforced that there was nothing flukey about the victory for Stark’s team when the pair produced a thrilling confrontation in Nijmegen in November.

Scotland couldn’t bring up a double, despite giving it a real go in the second period, with the introduction of West Brom midfielder Scott Allan after an hour supplying them with real drive. Indeed, the midfielder might have been the man to manufacture victory for his side when he played in Johnny Russell down the left with a perfectly weighted pass. But his former Dundee United team-mate couldn’t make the opening count and failed to find a way past the Dutch keeper with the goal at his mercy.

The Dutch looked more content with the tied scoreline. As well they might, having started out a point to the good in the group table.

They can expect to take full points from their final three games – two at home and the other against whipping boys Luxembourg – and in so doing makes Scotland pay for the home draws with Bulgaria and Austria.

Yet, as Stark noted afterwards, as much as they could have won all three of their homes games, they could have lost them.

All told, the tea-time return with the Dutch in Paisley, despite an impressive, if subdued, 6,607 crowd that will rank among the highest at St Mirren Park, sadly lacked the drama of the pair’s last meeting. Familiarity may have played its part. However, Scotland were still bright and adventurous in terms of the three attackers who played off Jordan Rhodes.

Granted, Gary Mackay-Steven did not see as much of the ball as would have been desired until later on, and little stuck for Rhodes, who too often found himself played in with back to goal. Russell, wriggled his way into dangerous areas and created shooting opportunities from nothing, though, with Stark calling his latest appearance his best for his country, while the under-21 coach draws an effectiveness from Wotherspoon that is proving beyond Hibernian.

The player’s problem last night was his honesty. A quarter of an hour in, he drove his way into the Dutch penalty box and clearly seemed to be pulled back by Patrick Van Aanholt. Instead of falling under a tug that sent him half spinning, Wotherspoon tried to reset himself and only succeeded in shooting past while off balance.

The Dutch immediately responded with the sort of quick, crossfield counter-attack that allowed them to slice their hosts open with three pinpoint passes. Their ability to build such moves at breathless pace and enjoy long spells of possession as they waited for the right moments to attack was their area of undoubted superiority to opponents bedecked in natty new kit of white shirts and blue shirts.

Scotland were fortunate that Adam Maher made such a hash of a glorious shooting opportunity when he had skulked in at the back post to finish off the slick ball-shuttling of his team-mates. As the interval approached, the home side were again bypassed down the left channel and Stark conceded only the fact that Leandro Bacuna battered the ball against fellow Dutchman Nacer Barazite from a telling Van Aanholt cut-back spared his side the loss of an opening.

It was luck that Scotland will believe the Fates repaid when, in the final moments, an Allan corner seemed to flash past the outstretched feet of a posse of players in white shirts. The close calls were exclusively reserved for the Dutch goalmouth in the second period with keeper Mark Ridgers and Danny Wilson both making crucial interventions.

Stark talked afterwards of his side’s ability to compete and willingness to give everything of themselves to ensure they didn’t lose games. With only two wins out of five, equally he accepted they haven’t won enough to avoid being mightily concerned about the ability even to be among the four best runners-up to join the 10 group winners in the seven play-offs to decide the seven teams who will join hosts Israel in next year’s finals.

Scotland under-21s hearten in their capacity for command of the football. That this hasn’t allowed them to be in command of their own destiny in Group 10, as Stark said, shouldn’t see commentators resort to all the old clichés about the technical deficiencies of young players in this country. These weren’t a telling factor against a Dutch side who, with one point from two games with Stark’s team, could lament, if they chose to, why they can’t do better than Scotland at under-21 level.

Ayr United 2 - 3 Ross County: Brittain’s hat-trick sends County clear at top

Published on Thursday 1 March 2012 04:37

ROSS County moved three points clear at the top of the table thanks to a brilliant hat-trick from skipper Richard Brittain.

The league leaders were quick to get into their stride and took the lead in 16 minutes in spectacular style. Brittain curled a superb right footed free-kick from just outside the box, on the left hand side, high into the net past Ayr goalkeeper Kevin Cuthbert.

Controversy raged in 37 minutes when referee Kevin Clancy awarded the softest of penalties to County after Gary Miller tumbled in the area under a challenge from Adam Dodd.

Ayr fought back to level the match thanks to a close-range header from Michael Moffat and an 18-yard lob by Keigan Parker, but County snatched a fantastic winner in 80 minutes when Brittain cracked home a 30-yard shot to complete his treble.

Slovenia 1 - 1 Scotland: Berra goal earns Scots a draw in Slovenia

ONE down, two to go. Craig Levein will have taken several positives from the first of three friendly matches he has planned before the start of another qualifying campaign. One boost was the ability to respond quickly to a setback.

Andraz Kirm’s header after 33 minutes provided the visitors with a jolt, and possibly gave Levein a reason to re-think his full-back options after Charlie Mulgrew and Russell Martin were both at fault as Miso Brecko’s cross from the right wreaked havoc in the Scotland defence. But there was nothing wrong with the visitors’ reaction. Within seven minutes Christophe Berra exposed deficiencies in the Slovenian defence to head home an equaliser and hand Scotland an encouraging result against a team ranked 21 places above them.

Indeed, Slovenia have World Cup qualifying ambitions of their own. Yet Scotland, missing key men in Darren Fletcher and Scott Brown, held their own on a trip which helped provide an indication of what they can expect to experience on forthcoming adventures in Croatia, Macedonia and Serbia. This is one reason why Levein chose to play Slovenia, who provided a stiff south-east European test.

Following the defeat in Spain in October, Levein had hinted that he might experiment with a two-person attack in forthcoming friendlies. However, here he restricted himself to selecting a player with a double-barrelled name to play as a lone striker.Jamie Mackie and James Forrest offered Craig Mackail-Smith support from either side of midfield.

The ploy appeared to work at first, although only after Scotland had to survive a near-thing when Josip Ilicic threaded a fine ball through to Valter Biras, whose effort was blocked by Allan McGregor’s legs.

A surprise was relayed by the teamsheets handed out prior to kick-off. They appeared to suggest Levein had decided against naming a single defender on the bench. This was later revealed to be a printing mistake and Grant Hanley and Ricky Foster supplemented the seven players named, as did goalkeeper Craig Gordon and Robert Snodgrass. It would have been a long way to come for these players to sit in the stand.

Nobody could describe Slovenia as pushovers, even if the staging of this match at the Bonifika stadium – capacity 4010 – gave the impression that Scotland were up against a lower division club side. Yet the hosts have made a better a fist of qualifying for major tournaments than Scotland in recent years and were present at the last World Cup, where they were beaten narrowly by England.

The surroundings made for a surreal switch of venues for Charlie Adam, who could be found spraying passes around Wembley’s lush turf just a few days earlier for Liverpool against Cardiff City. To be fair, the condition of the pitch was comparable to Wembley but Adam took a while to find his range. He overhit many of his first few passes but found the subtlety required after 26 minutes, when chipping into the path of James Morrison. The midfielder took a touch before shooting towards Samir Handanovic’s near post. The ‘keeper made a good save on to his post and was grateful to be able to clutch the ball to his chest after it fell back towards him.

Just a minute later McGregor tipped a Birsa free-kick over the bar as both goalkeepers enjoyed a sudden burst of activity. There was little McGregor could do about the goal which saw Slovenia take the lead after 33 minutes, however. There were others who had to admit culpability, including Mulgrew, sadly. The Celtic player has been earning rave reviews for his club at centre-half but was employed at full back by Levein. While he impressed going forward, he looked ill-at-ease when asked to defend and will regret his decision to dive in as Miso Brecko made his way down the right flank. The Slovenian right-back evaded the challenge and then had time to deliver a cross to the back post, where Kirm found Martin an easier defender to overcome in the air than should have been the case. His header bulleted beyond McGregor.

Scotland looked briefly shaken. However, they needed only seven minutes to drag themselves level, and Mulgrew re-claimed some credit by launching the attack which led to a corner on the left. Adam took the kick and Berra out-jumped a static-looking Slovenia defence to score a goal that was very similar in its execution to the opener. It was the least Scotland deserved, although Slovenia were clearly providing the kind of test Levein had desired.

The manager kept Kenny Dalglish on side by replacing Adam at half-time. Barry Bannan came on and quickly tested Handanovic with a long-range effort. The game was in danger of petering out as the second-half neared its midway point. Levein sought to provide some new impetus by sending on Robert Snodgrass for Mackail-Smith, and pushing Mackie up as the lone forward. Graham Dorrans also replaced Morrison as the game began to take on a slightly more experimental feel. Its flow was hampered by these stoppages although the fresh-legged Dorrans did his best to liven things up with some bursts of strong-running. Snodgrass, too, looked eager to make an impression and his cross to Mackie was headed just wide.

It proved to be Mackie’s last involvement of the evening. He made way for Kenny Miller, who became the third striker to feature in the lone forward’s position inside 90 minutes. Levein’s decision to stick rigidly to this formation again emphasised that he intends to do it his way when the road to Brazil begins in September.

Hooper snub ‘surprising’

Published on Thursday 1 March 2012 04:40

KELVIN Wilson is baffled that Celtic team-mate Gary Hooper was not called up for England’s friendly against Holland.

The Celtic striker has netted an impressive 20 goals so far this season to help fire Neil Lennon’s men into a commanding lead at the summit of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

However, Hooper’s efforts were not enough to catch the eye of Stuart Pearce and earn himself a place in the squad for last night’s clash at Wembley.

Asked if he believes England scouts discount players in the SPL, Wilson said: “I don’t know how it works, but I think Gary deserves one [a call-up]. This is the second season he’s scored goals here and he’s not just a goalscorer, his all-round play is very good. I’m surprised he’s not at least in the squad.”

The Celtic defender added: “People say the English league is stronger than the Scottish one. I think they called up David Nugent and Jay Bothroyd before when he was playing in the Championship. They’re saying the league is weak up here, but why are they calling up players from that league and not Gary Hooper?”

Wilson was also surprised to learn that Charlie Mulgrew – who was due to win his first cap on Wednesday against Slovenia – was not already a Scotland international.

Wilson said: “When I first came I thought he was a Scottish international, but when we had international breaks Charlie would come into training. I was very surprised. It doesn’t surprise me that he is there now and it doesn’t surprise a lot of people, to be honest. From what I’ve seen this season, in every game Charlie gets better.”

Ireland sub Cox comes to the rescue

Published on Thursday 1 March 2012 04:53

SUBSTITUTE Simon Cox claimed a last-gasp equaliser as the Republic of Ireland fought back to deny the Czech Republic victory in their friendly at the Aviva Stadium.

The West Brom frontman came off the bench to slot home an 86th-minute equaliser on a night when Ireland were second best for long periods, but, as so often under Giovanni Trapattoni, found a way to clinch a positive result.

Milan Baros had put the visitors ahead five minutes into the second half as the pressure they had created was finally made to tell. But they were unable to kill the game off and, amid late onslaught, Cox produced a cultured finish to claim a draw.

However, the degree to which the technically superior Czechs dominated possession for much of the game served as a reminder of what will lie ahead at the Euro 2012 for which they, like Ireland, have qualified.

In Bremen, France stunned Germany 2-1 with a goal in each half to win their friendly as the two sides continued their preparations for Euro 2012.

The French, who have now gone 18 games undefeated after losing the first two under coach Laurent Blanc, grabbed the leadafter 21 minutes when Olivier Giroud connected with a Mathieu Valbuena pass to beat keeper Tim Wiese.

Substitute Florent Malouda fired in from close range midway through the second half before Germany substitute Cacau cut the deficit in stoppage time.

Clint Dempsey fired the United States to a 1-0 win over Italy to leave the Azzurri’s Euro 2012 plans in further disarray. He netted 10 minutes into the second half in a largely deserved victory for Juergen Klinsmann’s visitors.

Attention-grabbing stories that West Virginia outside LB Bruce Irvin

Irvin has gone from the troubled workforce who spent time in juvenile jail into a reliable mid-round prospect like a pass rusher in significantly less than 5 several years.
at competitive price tag with a colossal amount. Irvin began when asked about his troubled past, I have got a alternative tale from a good deal of such men. I grew up inside of a rough neighborhood in Atlanta, dropped out of high school in 11th quality, received in certain troubling managing with all the completely wrong crowd. Then I finally noticed the light, obtained my GED, handed all five elements in the earliest look at.
And that January I went to high school and that i by no means seemed again. When he met a man named Chad Allen in Atlanta, Irvin's luck changed. Irvin was attending a prep university for troubled teens nevertheless the system folded whilst seeking to prepare for his GED. Allen was an everyday for the school, talking with all the kids about their lives although trying to provide choices and suggestions.

He would come [to the prep school] and consult with the youngsters and give them serious living encounters.
Irvin wound up attending San Antonio Junior Faculty for your 2009 time and he completed his GED in December of 2007. He had seventy two tackles, 21 for decline and sixteen sacks and have become the envy of most every essential university course inside the nation. His two years in Morgantown showcased more for the equivalent, 14 sacks in 2010 and also a first-team All-Big East variety in 2011. Now he is hoping to point out groups his troubles are with the past and he is ready to bring his skills to your NFL. With well known conditioning coach Tom Shaw and wanting to create some linebacker knowledge over and above dashing the passer, he's been performing out in Orlando.
We supply at optimal cost and high superior. His talent and perseverance make him a man to keep an eye on in April, however you will find absolute confidence that Irvin is extremely very much inside a function in progress, in more solutions than a person.
And listed here. We heard from a head mentor a couple of former Patriots safety and it was not genuine good before with the week. This morning was a special story. Atlanta's Mike Smith was asked about previous Patriot James Sanders and had practically nothing but nice important things to mention, unlike Chicago's Lovie Smith, who explained important things failed to employment out among the Bears and Brandon Meriweather.
on low cost. Smith stated, James is amongst the 17 f-r-e-e agents that we have now and he was an exceptionally good addition, a dependable addition for our secondary together with his knowledge, even if he's a younger player. We bought him late, he was a man who joined our soccer group proper prior to the year started off, so there was an acclimation interval but when he bought the chance to perform.
He performed well. He was a stabilizing consider our secondary. I in reality like his make-up, his skill set to be a man which will engage in sturdy and 100 % free protection. Team PFW notably Andy Hart may be very blissful to listen to that among the many all-time good men built a stable impact on his new crew if absolutely nothing else.

Northern Ireland 0 - 3 Norway: Michael O’Neill’s debut ends in defeat

Published on Thursday 1 March 2012 04:56

Michael O’Neill refused to rush to any conclusions after his first match in charge of Northern Ireland ended in a 3-0 defeat to Norway at Windsor Park.

O’Neill saw his side compete well, and perhaps edge the first half, only for Havard Nordtveit’s deflected effort to send the visitors in with a 1-0 lead. Northern Ireland were not as lively in the second period and as they grew tired in the closing stages Norway pressed home their advantage with goals from Tarik Elyounoussi and Espen Ruud. O’Neill was clearly frustrated by the losing margin but was measured in his reaction. “I’m disappointed with the result, you can’t get away from that,” he said. “It’s disappointing to lose two late goals when we were pushing to get something out of the game. I thought the scoreline was slightly harsh on us. It’s very difficult be analytical so soon after the game. I’ll look at the game again in the cold light of day and I’m sure I’ll find plenty of positives.”

Lively performances from Kilmarnock’s Dean Shiels and Shane Ferguson – who both started after O’Neill brought them in from two years in the cold – were two obvious high points. O’Neill added: “In the first half we did a lot of good stuff, played well and got a lot of possession. Dean had a good 90 minutes dropping into the hole I thought. I thought Shane did extremely well too. He was very bright every time he was in possession and worked very hard in terms of the shape of the team.”

O’Neill will have to wait until June 2 for his next game as national boss, a trip to Amsterdam to face Holland. He admits such limited contact with his squad will take some getting used to. “We don’t have a game for three months now and that’s a long time to carry a defeat around with you,” he said.

Holding the two away goals, the lightning broke a leading, advancing to the Manchester United seems to be only a matter of time, but the away game for AJAX did not give up, Manchester United with Manchester United Blue Jackets pay the price of their tough and nearly take the enemy lightly. Arena ball obviously does not get Manchester United lost two officers and men were happy, especially for goalies Degea, however if he magically threw herself out of the close proximity to each other in the 58th minute header, Manchester United also does not adhere to the last. What to Consider When Buying a Football Table

Table football is popular amongst all ages. Whether you want to play socially, with friends over some drinks, or you want to become a serious competitor in the sport, it is the dream of many to own your own table football table. Football tables traditionally featured in pubs and youth centres, but more and more people are seeing the benefits of owning a table at home.

The advantages of buying a table top football table

By owning your own table you will be able to challenge friends and family to matches, enjoying quality social time with a friendly competition. And, like other sports, your skills are going to improve with practice. So as well as never being bored at home again, you will probably never lose a table football competition â€" or bet - again!

The reasons why you should buy a football table are obvious. But once you have made that decision, you will need to decide on a number of factors.

Choosing the right size of Table Football

Unlike snooker and pool tables, which have set measurements, table football games have a range of sizes. This means that there is sure to be one to suit your home space, whether you intend to keep in the living room, garage or bedroom. If you are buying your table for a pub, club or other business you are likely to have more space to spare. Table football tables are generally around 150cm (length) by 80cm (width), although this changes dramatically depending on the style. Micro tables are much more compact (at 53cm x 92cm), and a table was designed by an artist to fit 11 players per side, at 7metres long!

The main thing to consider with the size of your table football table is not to buy too big â€" you will need plenty of space around it for players to move freely. Measure your space before making a purchase.

Types of Table Football

Most football tables come with 4 control handles on each side. It is likely you'll want more than two on each side for an added challenge and the possibility of playing 2 a side.

Do you want a covered table? This is ideal if you want the added security (the ball is less likely to get lost) and safety if you think young children will be playing. Weatherproof tables can be purchased for outdoor use. These are also going to be more robust so less likely to get damaged in rough pay or through drinks spillages.

Table top football tables are ideal for storing away, but you need to have a big enough table in the first place. If you are not buying a table-top football table think about height if young children will be playing.

Bonzini, Langoni and Garlando are popular brands of football tables. Your choice of brand is likely to be influenced by your budget and requirements. You will want an aesthetically pleasing football table which will match the room. They are available in a huge range of finishes so it is important to browse the different styles.

Buying a coin operated table is advisable if it is not solely for the use of friends and family. They allow you to generate a small income (perhaps to pay off the costs of the Table Football), and also prevent the same people spending too long on a table if others want to take a turn.

Cue Power sell a huge range of quality football tables in numerous designs. Their products including coin-operated tables, micro-sized tables and different brands, as well as all of the essential table football accessories.

The Process of Tennis Strokes

When developing your tennis forehand or backhand groundstrokes it comes with an order worth focusing on with the things that you accomplish. Certain outcomes of the stroke are certainly more important than the others and it is important that they can be accomplished within the correct order. Many of the forehand and backhand lessons which I teach will belong to such types of categories. It really is crucial to decide what a part of your stroke needs the improvement and don't skip over steps to obtain the rest which may be "cooler" to be effective on. One example is, if you are having a problem getting your forehand in play, regardless if you happen to be hitting topspin or not is less important than developing skills to create consistency. I am going to move through each component and explain each to help you decide how to start.
Consistency - The primary foundation coming from all strokes is consistency. If you're unable to have the shot in play, then any other aspects will not be important. Building consistency is one of the least "sexy" part of a tennis forehand or backhand however the most significant. For those who have a hard time obtaining the ball in play, imagine what it's planning to feel as though underneath the pressure of a third set tie breaker. If you're an consistent player, you are going to will have that to select from for those who are developing a bad day.
Accuracy - The ability to consistently control the direction on the ball is the next key to the stroke. Having the capability to position the ball in your opponents Tennis backhand consistently can win you several matches. You must manage to change direction of the the ball also. If the ball is on its way in from cross court changing direction so the ball travels down the line can be hard to perform on a consistent basis. Having the ability to control depth of the shot also is classified as accuracy category also. Keeping the ball deep so your opponent can't attack the net or giving the opponent short shots to push them to the net when their volleys are weak are strategies you'll be able to consistently execute when accuracy is mastered.
Spin - To be able to control spin on your strokes is the next in the chain worth focusing on. Using topspin and under spin to create your shots more appropriate is a vital source to improve on the previous accomplishments. A ball hit with spin is a considerably more controlled shot and consistent shot. Using topspin to generate the ball drop in the air will improve consistency by permitting you to hit higher over the net, lower the chance of hitting it inside the net, and have it still drop within the court. For direction, similar to a knuckle-ball in baseball, a ball without spin travels in an erratic path but a ball with spin is directed and controlled.
Power - Finally, we have to power. Power is exactly what everyone I teach appears to want more of, but as you can tell, if you don't have the cornerstone we've previously pointed out, power are going to do you no good. I define power as the speed in which the ball travels. Being able to improve your power would have been a necessity when playing with advanced level players. You will employ power to decrease the length of time the other person is required to respond to the ball including preparation time, movement time and reaction time.
Each forehand or tennis backhand lesson will fall in to one of these categories. You will need to identify which area you need to work on and find the lessons that are appropriate to your area of focus. If you need help with identifying your area concentration, please comment below and I will help you make that decision.

Seocnd Divison: Lyle picks perfect time to open Cowdenbeath account

Published on Monday 27 February 2012 04:28

TABLE-toppers Cowdenbeath left it late before defeating Brechin City 1-0 at Central Park to keep their two-point advantage over Arbroath.

The Blue Brazil had been knocking at the door for most of the game, with Gary Fisher, Mark Ramsay and Kenny Adamson all going close. It looked like it would be a blank day until striker Derek Lyle popped up some three minutes into injury-time to divert in a Greg Stewart effort from six yards out.

It was Lyle’s first goal for the Fifers since joining from Hamilton Accies last month and he is unlikely to score a more welcome goal.

Cowdenbeath player/manager Colin Cameron said: “We had been putting a lot of pressure on, but I was thinking it was just not going to be our day. I am really pleased that the players’ desire to keep us at the top kept them going despite some great saves and great defending from Brechin.”

Glebe Park manager Jim Weir said: “It was a really sore goal to lose as the boys battled really well.”

Second-placed Arbroath triumphed 3-1 at Stenhousemuir, with Steven Doris running onto a Brian Kerr pass to score, and Josh Falkingham bagging a fine solo effort to put the Red Lichties two up by half-time. Stewart Kean pulled a goal back with 20 minutes left, and Gary Smith’s header almost produced an equaliser when it hit the inside of the post.

However, Falkingham sealed the win with a free kick that goalkeeper Ally Brown helped on its way in.

Dumbarton defeated visiting bottom side Stirling Albion 4-1 despite falling behind to an early Scott Davidson goal.

Davidson was sent-off for a crude challenge on James Creaney shortly after Ally Graham had equalised two minutes into the second half, with Scott Agnew and Mark Gilhaney’s double consolidating the Sons in third place with a seven-point lead over Stenhousemuir.

Airdrie United saw goal- keeper Grant Adam dismissed in the first half for handling outside the area, and Sean Lynch red-carded in the second as they went down 2-0 to East Fife through Robert Sloan’s penalty and Craig Johnstone’s late goal.

Albion and Forfar remain locked together following their 2-2 draw at Cliftonhill, where Dale Hilson thumped the Loons ahead after three minutes, only for John Gemmell to quickly reply for Rovers.

Chris Templeman hooked Forfar in front midway through the first half, before Robert Love came off the bench to score his fourth goal of the season against Dick Campbell’s side.

Hearts 0 - 2 Dundee Utd: Lacklustre Hearts undone by United

By STUART BATHGATE
Published on Monday 27 February 2012 04:21

IN JANUARY last year, Hearts embarked upon a poor run of form which saw their hold on third place threatened and eventually cost Jim Jefferies his job.

This year, their results have followed a similar pattern, with the significant difference that it is their place in the top six, not just the top three, which is in jeopardy.

So, will Paulo Sergio lose his job? The Portuguese manager is only contracted for the season, and although he has declared his fondness for the club and for Edinburgh, in recent weeks he has appeared disillusioned.

He has stated several times that no-one has a right to demand that Hearts finish in the top four after the problems they have had this season, and he is certainly correct when he points out that financial circumstances have not been ideal. Last week, Craig Beattie became the club’s first signing since Sergio was appointed in the summer, and the former Celtic striker was not available for Saturday’s game because of a virus.

There were other mitigating circumstances in this defeat by United. Hearts began it without the excluded Marian Kello, the suspended Andy Webster and the injured Adrian Mrowiec, and by half-time had lost Marius Zaliukas and Ian Black to injury. In other words, the spine of their team, weakened to start with, had gone entirely by the mid-point of the match.

And yet there are many managers who would love to have the “problems” of which Sergio complains. They could do without the difficulties in paying salaries on time, but they would gladly have a squad as strong as the one at Tynecastle, even when those absences are taken into account.

So why, when that squad achieved five wins and a draw in six matches from December, have they now taken just one point – from a last-minute equaliser at Kilmarnock – from their last five? They put up a spirited display to win the Scottish Cup replay at St Johnstone, but their last really convincing win was at home to St Mirren, two weeks into the new year.

There is a growing conviction within the club that the previous excellent form was largely thanks to the players’ ability to put their off-field worries to one side and concentrate on reminding the outside world of how good they could be. Once such a sense of purpose begins to flag, as it did on a freezing afternoon at Inverness last month, it is up to the management team to find ways of restoring it.

At least Hearts began this match with some conviction, taking the game to United and playing some attractive football for much of the first half. But once they went a goal down just before the interval, when Jon Daly headed in a free-kick from the left, they were always going to be up against it.

Better organised, particularly at the back, United were able to play on the counter-attack, knowing their opponents would be unable to create many clear-cut chances. Gavin Gunning’s goal from another free header, this time following a corner, had been on the cards for a good 15 minutes before it arrived, and produced a result which was a fair reflection of the visitors’ superiority.

Before that second goal, there were two moments which might have turned the match around. First, Danny Grainger went down in the box following a challenge by Willo Flood, but referee Calum Murray refused to award a penalty.

Then Rudi Skacel was through on goal, but twice had shots blocked by Dusan Pernis, before Stephen Elliott’s attempt to hit home the rebound was blocked by Gunning.

On a frustrating afternoon for the home support, David Obua was the focus for much of the discontent, but a number of Hearts players were just as culpable of being ineffectual. Grainger’s energetic runs made him an exception; Scott Robinson led the team well after taking the captain’s armband from Zaliukas, and substitute Ryan McGowan also applied himself to some effect, but too many others were too easily demotivated.

Sergio’s other substitutions were questionable. Suso Santana and Andrew Driver, both wide players in a team which included Mehdi Taouil, were brought off the bench when the need was for more force in central midfield.

Denis Prychynenko and Jason Holt, both members of last season’s successful under-19 team, could have provided that force. They are inexperienced and may well have been unable to turn the game, but their introduction would have given Hearts a far better balance.

United had that balance, and as a consequence played far better as a team. Their third league win of the season against Hearts took them above the Edinburgh club into fifth, and on this form they are sure to be ahead of St Johnstone – whom they beat 5-1 two weeks ago – before long.

Hearts, for all the woes expressed by Sergio, should also finish above the Perth club, provided that between coaching staff and players they rediscover the spark they had around Christmas. With league games against Rangers and Hibs coming up, and a cup quarter-final against St Mirren in the middle, the next three weeks will determine whether they have an exciting climax to the season to look forward to, or whether that season will come to a premature and demoralising end.

If the latter, Sergio will be gone sooner rather than later. And even if his team does start winning again and he is asked to stay for a second season, a serious question will remain about the manager’s stomach for the fight.

Hoping for the best and preparing for the worst, McCoist braced as administrator’s axe poised to fall on playing staff

Published on Monday 27 February 2012 04:02

RANGERS manager Ally McCoist is bracing himself for the darkest days yet of the club’s period in administration, with members of his playing squad set to be among staff made redundant this week.

An announcement from administrators Duff and Phelps is expected tomorrow or Wednesday on the scale of job losses.

Paul Clark, the administrator who has been dealing directly with McCoist, confirmed for the first time at the weekend that players will be affected.

Director of football Gordon Smith and chief operating officer Ali Russell were informed last week that their employment was being terminated, while under-17 coach Alan Kernaghan has left to take up a role at Brentford.

So far, Australian midfielder Matt McKay is the only member of the playing staff to have been moved on by the administrators after being sold to South Korean club Busan I Park.

“We are still looking at other cuts, and I expect to make an announcement about this at some stage next week,” said Clark. “But those cuts will undoubtedly include playing staff.”

McCoist, speaking after Rangers’ 4-1 win at Inverness Caledonian Thistle yesterday, said he was unaware of Clark’s comment but is ready to deal with the potentially traumatic developments awaiting the club.

“There have already been job losses, we shouldn’t forget that,” said McCoist. “Paul Clark hasn’t actually told me that players will be going; I give you my word on that, but I’m not daft enough to think that there might not be cuts here and there.

“He will tell me what is happening, though. I have to say that Paul Clark has been great. It’s ironic to say that we have had productive meetings with an administrator but we have and I hope we continue in that vein.”

When the possibility that some of his squad may have played their last game for Rangers yesterday was put to him, McCoist replied: “We will discuss that if and when it happens.

“Hopefully, the worst case doesn’t happen. Today wasn’t about that, though. It was all about putting a smile back on the face of everyone at the club. By that I include the travelling fans, the coaching staff, the secretarial staff at Murray Park and Ibrox. Today was all about giving the entire club a boost, and I’m really pleased they did that. What I have said to the players is that I’m honest and transparent with them. There’s no point me calling a meeting when there is nothing for me to say. They know that I will tell them when I know anything via the administrator. I’m part of the staff under the administrator just like the players, albeit I am higher up the pecking order when it comes to receiving information.

“One thing the players have always had and needed during my time with them is a healthy respect for each other to go and play. They did that today. When you look about, they have been battered and bruised and took a couple of standing counts. But they are far from out. The willingness to help each other and give the entire club a boost was there to see.

“I said what I had to say to them before the game today but, as Walter Smith used to say, the vast majority of the times you play for Rangers the motivation has to come from within.

“That’s why they play at a club like Rangers. No matter who the opposition are, you have to win and are expected to win the vast majority of games. You have a huge level of self motivation at this club which maybe you don’t get at other clubs.” Inverness manager Terry Butcher heaped praise on the attitude of the Rangers players, which he compared unfavourably to his own team’s approach.

“Rangers deserve a lot of credit for what was a great team performance under the circumstances they find themselves in,” he said.

“That Rangers team might never play together again, but I thought they showed great application, which we didn’t.

“Everything about the game was poor from our point of view. We were lucky it was only 4-1.”

Kilmarnock 1 - 3 Hibs: Spirited Hibs get up, stand up in their search for redemption

Published on Monday 27 February 2012 04:12

IF THE gravity of their situation was not enough of an incentive, Hibs have now turned to the tunes of Bob Marley to help shake them out of their relegation nightmare.

The Easter Road side won only their second SPL game in 16 but it was enough to give them a welcome advantage over their main rivals for the drop, Dunfermline. Now three points ahead, with a better goal difference and a game in hand, they showed some spirit to bounce back from the previous week, which had seen them concede nine goals in two fixtures.

Manager Pat Fenlon said he preferred to pick out the positives. There were none to be gleaned from the hammering they suffered at the hands of Celtic, who are now considered champions elect, but that wasn’t the case against Motherwell midweek. After his men had put together a well-merited win over Kilmarnock on Saturday, the Irishman said that the encouraging fact was that his men had now scored six goals in two games, both away from home.

Crucially, on Saturday they managed to get their three goals without leaking even more at the other end. It was enough to put a bounce in their step and although Kilmarnock did apply a modicum of pressure in the dying stages of the fixture, pulling one back late on, the goals had given them the belief to see out the remaining minutes.

There have been trying times for Hibs this season and even the hoped for cure for their ills has given them plenty to concern themselves with. Almost an entire team of signings were brought in throughout January, and while they look like they could now ensure the club’s survival in the SPL, they unifying process can’t have been easy.

“When you bring in new players it takes time for everyone to gel,” said Isaiah Osbourne, “but the relationship we have as a team makes it easy to get comfortable. As soon as I signed for Hibs I felt comfortable within a week or so. That’s just the way we are. We’re all just like one big family.

“Ivan Sproule helps bring the dressing room together. He’s lively at all times of the day. He’ll come in and start singing in the morning. He sings a bit of Bob Marley and ‘Jamming’ is his favourite. He’s pretty good to be fair. I like his performances and I’m a Bob Marley man myself.

“We had a bit of Bob playing in the changing room at Kilmarnock after the game. The good thing is that everyone knows Bob Marley. Pa (Kujabi) enjoys it a lot and while Claros doesn’t understand the words, I think he likes the beat. We were all ‘Jamming’ before and after the game – it was a bit of inspiration.”

But if the capital side were ‘Jamming’, their opponents were ‘Hurting Inside’. For the second time in a month, Kilmarnock were out done by the team nestled several places below them in the standings. When they were ousted from the Scottish Cup, manager Kenny Shiels cited a degree of misfortune, but on Saturday even he conceded Hibs deserved the victory.

They had made it easy for them to get off the mark, with Lee Johnson far too slack when he allowed Tom Soares to get onto a Leigh Griffiths ball and the Englishman punished Kilmarnock by slotting it low into the net on the angle in the 13th minute. Had the home side come back at them with any kind of intent Hibs may have suffered some jitters, but instead they failed to find their passing game and struggled to show any kind of penetration. As a consequence Hibs found their self-belief. Tighter at the back they were able to cope with missed chances when Griffiths failed to bury a couple of opportunities he was favourite to convert. Then, at the start the second half, a wonder strike from Roy O’Donovan saw them increase their lead. That was in the 47th minute. In the 66th minute all three points were secured, with Soares again finding the target and Griffiths the supplier.

“The result wasn’t a surprise with the way we’ve been playing in the last few weeks. We’ve been playing well to be honest, although the result against Celtic was a bad one,” said Osbourne. “We thought we should have beaten Motherwell in midweek but it was just bad mistakes which cost us again It was down to us to make sure we did things right at the back – and we did that.”

For Kilmarnock, though, it was a bad afternoon at the office. A week earlier they had been bettering Rangers at Ibrox, but despite Dean Shiels’ 83rd-minute free-kick which zipped past Graham Stack, they never looked like claiming the three points for the second Saturday in succession.

“I don’t know what happened,” said defender Mo Sissoko. “When we play against the leading teams the players are more motivated but we’ve been really bad in the last two games. We have to work harder on that side of it. “I think it’s to do with the mentality. When you are focused, you try to play better and now we have five or six games before the split and we have to bounce back from this.”

The manager said there could now be questions asked about his squad’s strength of character, and they will have to find some positive answers soon. Top six is the target, especially as Rangers’ problems mean that the other five teams in that half of the table could be looking forward to European football next term.

There is also the small matter of a trophy to play for in a few weeks, when they meet Celtic in the League Cup final. Shiels said: “Every player is thinking about the cup final but we have two or three games before that and we must focus on them because if we think of Hampden too early then it will be bad for our top-six chances. To win the final would be great for the fans but top six is important too. We have to concentrate more in training and then on the pitch because if we play like we did on Saturday against Cetlic we’ll lose.”

What a great final was that !

Xu Xin to be the winner of the Qatar Open 2012 edition defeating Wang Hao in a 7 sets match. The match brought us a lot of emotions and a lot of great performance coming from both players.

The first set was pretty close and already gave us some good rallys. When it was 5:3 for Xu Xin, he didn't give Wang any chances playing an incredible topspin, which seemed actually to be played to Wang's backhand, but in fact the ball went to his forehand surprising Wang pretty much. After a while Xu run uot with a 7:3 for him, than 9:6 and finally 11:6 which brought him a 1:0 advantage in the match.
The next set was a bit closer starrting with a great sidespin from Xu Xin. When it became to 5:4 for Xu both players came up with a great counter topspin rally. After some time Wang took the law into his own hands and made a 8:6 advantage for him winning the set by 11:7 leveling the match to 1:1.
The third set was even more exciting. Starting with a great counter topspin rally just like in the second set, than 7:5 with an another great rally. After that, both players leveled up with a 9:9, but than Wang came up with 11:9 win and had 2:1 in the match.
The next set was definitely the fastest one with a 11:4 win for Wang Hao and bringing the match to perhaps the last set having 3:1.
The fifth set was definitely one of the most exciting in this game. Starting with a 4:4, than 5:5, than a 7:6 for Xu, 7:7 and 9:9. After that Wang seemed to be done for this final having a 10:9. Unfortunately for him, he did a bad mistake putting the ball into the net with his backhand. At least Xu won the set by 12:10.
The next set wasn't maybe that close, but it was definitely a nice set with some really good rallys. In this set Wang didn't have that much chances bacause of Xu Xin's great play. Starting with a 5:4 for Xu, than 8:4, 9:5 and finally 11:5.
The last set of this great final was definitely the most spectacular and exciting one. It started with a 6:4 for Xu Xin, than 7:5, when both players played an amazing rally with a lot counter topspins and a great smash from Wang Hao at the end. After a while Xu made a 9:6, which brought him a big domination, but Wang didn't get demoralised and leveled up with a 9:9. After that Wang seemed to get so confident winning an another poing having a championship point. When Wang was so close to the tittl, Xu showed he is still into this game defending the match point. When it got 10:10 and the pressure got so visible Xu won the next two point winning ending this final with a great rally.
So there we go, the 2012 Qatar Open winner is Xu Xin.

Identify Singles Play in Tennis

Your tennis type of play will depend on anything you do well and what your weaknesses are over a match situation. I'm able to break the variety of playing styles down straight into four categories that generally everyone will fall straight into. The reason understanding this is certainly so important isn't just to assist classify your personal play, but also be ready to identify the other person's type play. Armed using this knowledge of the other person's style, it will be possible to determine which shots, type of play and mental approach can beat them.
A excellent player should be able to play multiple styles well so that they might have something to fall back on when they begin to wind up behind in the match.
Here are some general play styles you will find while playing a match.
Aggressive Baseliner
An aggressive baseliner is usually a player who stays back most likely during points. This player mostly takes the ball on the rise and uses power and quickness to defeat his/her opponents. An aggressive baseliner may come in to the net but doesn't apply it usually. When they certainly appear in, it will be in the ideal situation like a driving shot into a corner the place that the opponent is quite off-balance and on the run. Another characteristic is generally a powerful serve. This should let the aggressive baseliner to acquire over the offense right away where they are comfortable.
The very best instance of an aggressive baseliner was Andre Agassi. His utilization of the rising groundstroke and crush everything attitude revolutionized the fact that game was played. Although he wasn't renowned for his serve, it was quite effective and often had a quite high ace count.
The Counterpuncher
A counter punch player is the person who everybody dreads. The counter puncher puts the ball back play and runs everything down. Usually this player will not make a great deal of power but will depend on his capability to stay consistent and foot speed. Many time this player will probably have one shot that they are able to put away within the perfect situation just like a short ball to his forehand, for instance. Other terms with this player might be a pusher, a backboard or hustler. What ever you refer to them as, they could beat you unless you are patient.
If you're an aggressive baseliner, you'll possess essentially the most issues with this style. You should be patient and wait for the ball to attack on. Keep in your mind you could be out on the court quite a long time and take care of it. One of the best style against this player is a serve and volleyer because athat happen to be suitable for anyone in the net.
The Serve and Volley Player
Although there aren't many of these players on the tour any more, it remains a very viable tennis strategy of play, ask John McEnroe. This player wants to get right to the net and set the point away and usually has a successful serve. This player loves short points and dominates on the faster surfaces like grass.
The serve and volley player usually struggles more up against the aggressive baseliner since they have great passing shots which enable it to allow it to become tricky to be offensive. This style of player is generally more successful against the counter punch player for reasons stated above.
The All Court Player
The all court player can virtually do any of the styles above effectively. They often have strong groundstrokes as well as volley very proficiently too. Pete Sampras is an excellent demonstration of this player and his closet packed with trophies will show you how effective the style can be.
Since they can be equipped to execute every one of the styles makes you capable to counter anything that is thrown at you. When someone serves and volleys, you've got passing shots. If someone counter punches, you possess volleys. The problem is, it's going to take a lot of work to perfect all the styles.
Having the playing styles in singles is compared to playing rock, paper and scissors. At the time you play one style, there exists one you need to beat and one you are likely to struggle against. I am not to imply you can't beat your less desired style to play against, I am just just saying that it's going to tougher. By developing each of the styles, you will discover what style the opponent chooses and then make selection to counter it.
Identifying your playing tennis strategy is important so you're able to perfect the styles that you are weak in. You will additionally have the capacity to select playing surfaces you happen to be stronger on. Every bit as important is identifying your opponent's style. In case your styles is the same however are less proficient, then you can change when you are down in the match and even climb back in to it with a new strategy.

Arsenal 5 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur: Five-star Arsenal stun Spurs

Published on Monday 27 February 2012 04:22

HARRY Redknapp’s CV took a real hit yesterday as Arsenal produced a sensational comeback to inflict Tottenham’s biggest north London derby defeat since 1978.

Spurs looked certain to enhance Redknapp’s England credentials by making him their first manager for 86 years to win away against the Gunners for two successive seasons and first to do the double over them for 19.

But, in a complete reversal of last season’s corresponding fixture, Tottenham threw away a two-goal lead to concede five at Arsenal for the first time since 1934.

Arsenal looked all over the place at the back as Spurs raced to a two-goal lead through Louis Saha and an Emmanuel Adebayor penalty.

However, captain Robin Van Persie refused to accept defeat, helping his side score twice in three minutes to go in level by half-time, netting the equaliser after Bacary Sagna pulled a goal back.

Arsenal – who leapfrogged Chelsea back into fourth in the Barclays Premier League – were rampant after the break, Tomas Rosicky completing the comeback, and Theo Walcott scoring twice before Scott Parker was sent off to compound Tottenham’s misery. After the game, a chastened Redknapp said: “Even at 2-0, I couldn’t say I felt over-comfortable.”

The Spurs manager, who had to listen to taunts of “Harry for England” from Gunners fans, added: “I wanted to get to half-time [at 2-0] but I felt they were creating chances and we looked a bit open really.

“It was a difficult one. I felt at half-time I needed to try to thicken us up a little bit.

“That should have happened, but didn’t. We didn’t defend well. It was basic, really.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: “It was a performance full of everything you want from your team.

“It had team spirit, technique, resilience. It was an exciting game, we had a difficult start but kept going and showed great character again today,” he told Sky Sports News.

“When you’re 2-0 down against a team in front of you with the quality they have, you need something exceptional. We refused to lose today, we kept going and in the end I think we had too much quality and drive.”

Asked if it is still a foregone conclusion that Spurs will finish ahead of them in the league, Wenger said: “I don’t think so. Mathematically we can come back.

“If we’re consistent, anything is possible.”

It looked like being so different after four minutes, when Arsenal’s shambolic defending from the 4-0 defeat at the hands of AC Milan 11 days before resurfaced.

Former Gunners striker Adebayor played the ball into a space for Saha to run into, with Thomas Vermaelen’s lame block only succeeding in deflecting the Frenchman’s shot over the stranded Wojciech Szczensy On 32 minutes, Gareth Bale was under all sorts of pressure from Kieran Gibbs and threw himself to the floor under what looked no contact from Szczensy.

Adebayor kept his cool to rub salt into the wound but wisely chose not to celebrate.

Arsenal’s rally began five minutes before the break. Van Persie was desperately unlucky to hit the post before Mikel Arteta sent the ball back in and Sagna powered home a header.

Three minutes later, Arsenal’s Dutch skipper swept a Benoit Assou-Ekotto clearance past Spurs keeper Brad Friedel and into the net for the equaliser.

Rosicky made it 3-2 in the 51st minute, playing a one-two with Sagna before poking in the latter’s deflected cross.

As in the first half, the Gunners scored twice in three minutes to kill the game.

It was a brilliant counter-attack that brought the 65th-minute fourth goal, Yossi Benayoun releasing Van Persie, who held off Ledley King and Younes Kaboul before squaring for the onrushing Walcott to clip the ball over Friedel.

It was Tottenham’s defence that was now all over the place, and Kaboul played Walcott onside, the winger racing onto Alex Song’s pass and finding the bottom corner in the 68th minute.

RocketBallz Technology Create TaylorMade Rocketballz Fairway Wood

After happy the Valentine's Day every year, we know the spring will come sooner than later. With the advent of spring, everything comes to life again. It was thawing fast. But the TaylorMade Company continues to create the new and superior quality golf for the new season.

Rocketballz, I think it is not strange for us now. The new line released in the beginning of 2012. This is years in the making, a byproduct of extensive research and development to find breakthrough performance in fairway woods and Rescues, most specifically increased ball speed. RocketBallz fairway cheap golf club sets engineered to dramatically increase ball speed and distance. Matte-white finish and larger head are easy to align and launch - undeniably a lethal combination.

The crown's matte-white finish and the black club face are the first two things you'll notice when you look at one of these clubs. The white head reduces sun glare, the black face frames the ball and makes the club easy to align, and the combination inspires confidence by making the club head look larger in comparison to the ball. That black face is hot, too. Designed specifically to increase ball speed, it is the first steel fairway wood that reaches R&A/USGA speed limits. Taylormade believe the technology in the new Rocketballz Fairway Wood will gain better players up to 17 yards.

TaylorMade has used a Pull-Face construction to produce a high-strength 455 alloy steel face that combines high MOI with a larger hitting area. The deep face design and low centre-of-gravity are paired with a new deep sole pocket. The low and forward center of gravity is accomplished by moving the weight of the club forward rather than placing it in the back like a traditional fairway. This durable, yet flexible, Speed Pocket is designed to improve overall head and face flexibility and increase ball speeds. The standard version is fitted with a Matrix Ozik Xcon 5 50-gram shaft. Standard is available on cheap golf club sets.

TaylorMade Rocketballz Fairway Wood Main Features:
>Speed Pocket in the sole boosts ball speed dramatically for more distance
>Thick-Thin Crown design creates lower CG to promote higher launch for more distance
>Exceptionally large, deep face and high-MOI head for easy launch
>Slightly heavier shaft for accuracy and control
>White crown and black face makes alignment easy and eliminates glare on top
>Engineered compact head for a penetrating trajectory and neutral flight bias with heavier/stiffer shaft for more stability
