SPL Fanzone: St Johnstone

Published on Wednesday 8 February 2012 00:00

I THINK most Saints fans will be delighted to still be in the cup draw and happy with our potential quarter-final opponents after Sunday’s trip to Tynecastle.

We got it all wrong in the first half and Steve Lomas has held his hands up. Our second-half performance was far improved – with Sheridan and Sandaza again combining to lethal effect.

Referee Craig Thomson booked three men for dissent, even though none of Dave Mackay, Murray Davidson or Ian Black made any gestures or approached him in anyway. Mackay, of course, was later to receive an unbelievably soft second yellow.

Back to league business this week with Rangers’ conquerors Dundee United visiting McDiarmid. They’re the only team we’ve failed to beat since returning to the SPL – here’s hoping we can change that.

Johnson, Lee, Wi in Pebble lead ? 1/4 ^2? 1/4 ?

"I had to pick up slack to stop the ball, and it picked up slack and went in," smiled the South Korea-born New Zealander, who first hit the headlines when he won the 2008 US Amateur

"After that, I got good momentum going and I played TaylorMade RocketBallZ RBZ Irons with graphite shafts really nicely."

Johnson, at No 10, the highest World-ranked player in the field, was clearly happy at being back at one of his favourite Tour stops.

"Today I would have liked any golf course, I played that well," said the beaming Johnson who posted an eagle of his own at the par-four third where he nailed a 45 footer.

"Yes, I love being out here. I love the courses. They all set up very well for me. I feel comfortable on them, especially off the tees."

Earlier American Tour journeyman Ken Duke had blitzed the back nine at Pebble Beach in a record eight-under 28 on his way to his 64 and his tied for 4th with PGA Tour rookie Brian Harman, another of those who teed-off at Pebble Beach.TaylorMade RocketBallZ RBZ Irons with graphite shafts

Duke, a seasoned 43-year-old who has yet to win on the PGA Tour, also made an eagle when he holed out from the fairway at the par-four 16th.

"When the weather is like this, you really have to take advantage of this golf course and the conditions," said Duke who mixed seven birdies and one bogey with his eagle.

"I just kind of hit it close the whole back nine, and dunked the one on 16. When it's going good like that, things like this happen," Duke added.

Woods, who is tied for 15th heading into the second round, hit 11 of 14 fairways and was pretty happy with hisTaylorMade RocketBallZ RBZ Irons with graphite shafts , but he indicated that he had been frustrated by his short game and approach shots to the green, normally one of his greatest strengths

"I just wasn't very good with my irons so I'll have to go and work on that. I left a few shots out there for sure," he said after hitting 11 of 14 fairways.

"It seems like the rest of the guys are going pretty low around this place. They are just tearing the place apart.

"This (Spyglass Hill) is the hardest of the three (venues) so hopefully the next two days I can get TaylorMade RocketBallZ RBZ Irons with graphite shafts going," added Woods, who won this event in 2000 before going on to win the US Open later that year at Pebble Beach Links.

Hearts boss has selection headache for Celtic clash

Published on Wednesday 8 February 2012 11:57

HEARTS manager Paulo Sergio must make two key decisions on his team before tonight’s meeting with Celtic at Tynecastle, with Danny Grainger returning to the squad and David Templeton set to miss out due to injury.

Sergio will have to choose between Andy Driver and Mehdi Taouil to occupy the wide left position as Templeton struggles with a tendon problem sustained in Sunday’s Scottish Cup tie with St Johnstone. Also, at left-back, the Portuguese faces a dilemma over whether to reinstate Grainger or keep faith with the impressive Ryan McGowan.

Grainger has played only once since the end of October because of a persistent groin complaint but is now ready to return to first-team action. “Grainger is okay,” said Sergio. “I could have selected him for the last game but maybe he will be in the squad. He is ready.

“He is returning from a problem he had but I think he is okay for tonight and for the next few games. We have a problem with Templeton from the last game and Webster had a small complaint too, but I believe he (Webster) is going to be okay. Templeton has been on the bike in the gym but I don’t know yet if he will play.”

Sergio predicted a stern test from table-topping Celtic, who arrive in Edinburgh looking to secure a 16th consecutive victory in domestic competition. “We will have to be at our best level to get a good result. They are the team in the best position, that’s clear,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hearts striker John Sutton has received international clearance to finalise a four-month loan move to Central Coast Mariners in Australia. The Englishman’s contract runs until 2014 at Tynecastle but he struggled to establish himself under Sergio and has headed Down Under hoping to play regularly.

“It’s not something that I had been thinking about until I got the opportunity to talk to a few people about it,” he said. “It is an adventure for four months and we’ll see what happens after that but hopefully when I come back I can do well for Hearts again.

“I’ll be interested to see how the boys are doing at Hearts as I have a lot of good friends at the club and there is plenty for them to play for. I think they have a very good chance in the Scottish Cup and with a bit of consistency in the league, could finish third.”

Hearts, meanwhile, are confident of settling an outstanding tax bill of around £150,000 to avoid a winding up order issued by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. The public notice of the winding up order appeared in yesterday’s The Scotsman.

A club statement read: “The club is aware of the notice placed in a newspaper today relating to an earlier petition presented to the Court of Session. The club is working to resolve the situation.

“The club is confident that the relevant matter involving HMRC will be resolved in the very near future and no action as specified in the public notice will take place.”

LIAM Craig and Dave Mackay were St Johnstone’s goalscorers in an inspired performance at Tynecastle which left Hearts winless for the fifth game in six. Mehdi Taouil struck a consolation - his first goal in maroon - with four minutes remaining but Jamie Hamill missed a costly second half penalty which would have levelled the game at 1-1.

2011 Review: A tumultuous year at Tynecastle ends with wages crisis plunging club into more chaos

PAULO SERGIO is chalking off the dates on the calendar in his Riccarton office. Tomorrow brings an important SPL meeting with St Mirren and another day nearer the end of January, when the Hearts manager will finally be able to relax.

STEPHEN ELLIOTT, Mehdi Taouil and Andy Driver are fit and available for Hearts’ Scottish Cup tie with St Johnstone this weekend, while Danny Grainger also has a chance of facing his former club.

THERE aren’t many other sides in Scotland – probably none – outwith the Old Firm who could make eight changes from a side that drew away to Tottenham and still run out convincing winners over an SPL rival just a few days later.

Hibs Lewis Stevenson thriving under Pat Fenlon’s leadership

By ALEX SCHWEITZER-THOMPSON
Published on Wednesday 8 February 2012 11:59

A LITTLE more than four months ago, Lewis Stevenson was seriously contemplating life beyond the club where he has given the longest unbroken service of any first-team player.

The midfielder had serious concerns for his future at Hibs while enduring a concerted spell of exile from the first team and was considering the option of leaving – on loan or permanently – in the latter part of Colin Calderwood’s reign as manager.

Stevenson has since transformed himself into a mainstay of the Hibs midfield under Pat Fenlon and has started every match during the reign of the Irish manager, who was appointed at the end of November. The diminutive player, who turned 24 last month and has now made more than 100 appearances in seven years at Easter Road, is grateful for being handed the chance to shine in the centre of the pitch alongside Isaiah Osbourne. Not that he’s taking the opportunity for granted.

“It’s good to get a run of games under my belt,” said Stevenson. “It’s been nice, but I know it can all change in the blink of an eye with a couple of bad performances. It’s been a few years since I’ve played ten games in a row.”

Indeed, Stevenson has started every single one of his team’s last 14 games since impressing upon his return to senior action in a 0-0 draw at Celtic Park at the end of October. Before then, a ten-week run of games in which the player made just a handful of substitute appearances – after starting the first three games of the season – led a frustrated Stevenson to ponder thoughts of leaving.

“I suppose things like that always go through your head, because a footballer’s career is so short,” he said. “I spent quite a bit of time on the sidelines and began to think, at my age, I should be playing at some kind of level. If I went a few months without playing, I would naturally begin to think about things – I think everyone has to do that. You can’t look too far into the future.

“The old manager [Calderwood] started me in the first few games of the season, but the team and I didn’t play well. I’ve only got myself to blame. You have to accept that things like that happen – I’ve been dropped a few times in my career.”

It is unlikely that Stevenson will encounter someone more critical of his performance than himself, and admits he grew frustrated with short spells during games early this season in which he would lose his focus. Now, he believes he is reaping the rewards of a prolonged run in the senior side.

He said: “I’ve played the same position since the new manager’s been in charge. It’s nice to get a bit of continuity: you start to learn your position more, where to be on and off the ball, and which spaces to move into.

“I played the old manager’s last two games and played when Billy Brown was in charge [as interim boss]. It’s nice to know that you’re doing all right. It was kind of disheartening before – I felt I was doing okay, but the results weren’t going the right way. Now, it doesn’t seem that long that I was out of the team. People say it feels like being in Siberia when you’re not playing, but I never felt like that.”

Manager Fenlon has recruited heavily in the central midfield position, and credit must go to Stevenson for retaining his place in an area of the pitch where, for Hibs, competition for places is fierce. With Osbourne, Tom Soares and Jorge Claros all set to jostle for a start in midfield in the coming weeks, Stevenson’s ability to achieve a consistency in his performances is paramount.

“We have a lot of players vying for each position, so if you don’t perform, you’re out. There’s a lot of new players in and a few out.

“Isaiah’s a top player – he’s played in the English Premier League, so he’s going to be a joy to play with. He can do a lot of things I can’t do, but hopefully we complement each other well. Jorge and Tom can play in the middle, and we have a lot of players who can play in centre of midfield. Whatever happens I’m going to have to be ready for the challenge.

“Jorge is really good on the ball. He’s called ‘El Pitbull’, but has been quite calm in training. He looks composed and calm. We’ve got Richie Towell, too, who last played against Inverness and did well. Tom adds a bit of class and is not scared to try a pass and supports you in tight situations. There are also boys like Welshy [Sean Welsh] who’s been a top player and has gone on loan to Partick. It shows that we’re going to be fighting for places in midfield.”

With an increased rate of first-team starts having coincided almost exactly with the appointment of Fenlon, it is little wonder Stevenson is enjoying life as a vital part of the Irishman’s plans. His new lease of life, however, can also be attributed to the arrival of assistant Billy Brown in September.

“I’ve enjoyed my time at Hibs with every manager, to be honest,” said Stevenson. “It does feel different with the current manager here but it’s hard to hit the nail on the head and say why.

“Billy’s been there so there’s been continuity through the different managers. He has been a big influence and thinks if we can be more disciplined then we can transfer that onto the pitch.”

Stevenson hopes to continue the feelgood factor that surrounds himself and a Hibs team fresh from recording a first home win since the end of September. This weekend, Hibs go into their SPL meeting with Aberdeen on the back of a cup win over Kilmarnock, and their No.?16 is looking to an omen to bring another win for Fenlon’s men.

“The last couple of games, Rangers and Killie, have perhaps not been the best games, but we can hopefully build on our win at the weekend,” said Stevenson. “After the last cup game against Cowdenbeath last month, we beat Dunfermline, so hopefully we can do the same this weekend after beating Kilmarnock. Aberdeen are on a decent run of form as well, and we know it’s going to be a hard game.

“We showed a bit of resilience against Killie, and hopefully this weekend we can defend as well as we did. We stopped playing after 20 minutes, which was a bit frustrating, but if we can play for 20 minutes, why not for the whole game?”

Translating short-term form into long-term prospects is exactly what Stevenson – and Hibs – must achieve to bring in a brighter future.

New Hibs manager insists discipline is key and says ‘everything is in place’ for success, writes Aidan Smith

2011 Review: The past 12 months have been testing for Hibs fans, with cup shocks and managerial changes

THE lights going out at their training centre at East Mains yesterday summed up Hibernian’s start to the new year. Fans must hope that communication lines were not also affected by the temporary power-cut caused by the wild weather.

TOM SOARES must have felt a heavy sense of relief when Hibs boss Pat Fenlon called to offer him the chance to resuscitate a career that has stalled during four seasons at Stoke City.

Highland League: Huntly knock Forres off the top thanks to Booth

Published on Monday 13 February 2012 02:16

FLAME-HAIRED striker David Booth admits size does matter in the Highland League.

The diminutive Huntly frontman hit a double to help knock physical Forres Mechanics off the top for the first time since early October.

In the 4-2 home victory, Booth made it 13 goals from 14 starts.

Cove Rangers’ 3-0 win at Rothes sent them a point clear, although the Can Cans have two games in hand.

Booth said: “Forres are top of the league for a reason, so to turn them over today was fantastic.

“It was end-to-end and, I’d imagine, really exciting to watch. But it was pretty physical and a bit long ball at times.

“They have massive men at the back, and I’m only something like 5ft 8ins. I just have to look to get in behind them or pull off short and get them turning.”

Simon Allan scored an own-goal for Huntly’s opener before Willie Barron equalised for Forres. Booth pounced twice before the break and in the second-half, Garry Tweedie brought Forres back to 3-2 before Klezckowski sealed the points in stoppage time.

Elsewhere, Buckie Thistle won 3-2 win at Lossiemouth while Keith thrashed Steve Paterson’s Formartine 5-1 and Inverurie Locos hammered Brora 6-1.

Turriff hit five without reply at home to Fort William and Wick won 3-1 at Fraserburgh.

Player of the Month Scott Brown feels he’s back to his best

Published on Wednesday 8 February 2012 02:27

SCOTT Brown believes he is performing at his optimum level for the first time in five seasons. The Celtic captain was named SPL Player of the Month for January yesterday, having been instrumental in his team’s impressive surge to the top of the table.

The 26-year-old midfielder has been troubled by ankle problems in recent years, the most recent of which sidelined him for two months earlier this season. But surgery has finally allowed Brown to play pain-free and recapture his most effective form.

“I probably last felt this good physically when I first signed for Celtic [in 2007],” he said. “I was injury free for the whole season. I was sharper, got a good run of games in and I felt fit. But then the injury was always there. No matter what happened, I couldn’t get rid of it. I went for an operation and it was still there, but once I got a screw put in it last time, everything has been ideal.

“Everyone in their career has a downturn. Coming back from ankle injury after ankle injury was quite hard. I’m not making excuses, because I still played and tried to give everything I had. I just wasn’t as sharp as I should have been. I should maybe have had a little more rest, but I was eager to come back and play.

“I feel brilliant now, touch wood. I just enjoy playing for this club. I enjoy the supporters, my team-mates and the manager. It’s a great place to be and I don’t think I’d want to be anywhere else.”

Celtic manager Neil Lennon’s faith in Brown has not always been replicated among the club’s support but he believes his captain is forcing many of his detractors to have second thoughts.

“You never please everybody all the time,” said Lennon. “Even in the team I played in here, people would have had their objections to myself or Alan Thompson, or Johan Mjallby, or Bobo Balde, or Chris Sutton – probably the only exception would have been Henrik Larsson. But I certainly think Scott is making people think again. In my interim period as manager, he was absolutely fantastic and you don’t lose that. He’s a great athlete and has been brilliant for us since he came back into the team.”

Hearts’ Ryan McGowan ready to rib family’s Celtic fans

Published on Wednesday 8 February 2012 11:59

DEEP in suburban Adelaide, South Australia, Mr and Mrs McGowan will just be rising for the day when Hearts meet Celtic at Tynecastle. By the time they arrive at work, son Ryan will have blitzed their mobile phones with messages of delightful ribbing if the final result goes his way.

The Hearts defender’s family is dominated by Celtic supporters with both his parents originally from Glasgow. The time difference means they will monitor events from Tynecastle on television before heading out on Thursday morning. Many within the McGowan clan have already had their say on this evening’s encounter.

“I do get stick. My family are mostly all Celtic fans so I’ve been getting a little bit of abuse this week. That’s just part and parcel of football. Over here I’ve got some Hibs friends – well, I wouldn’t call them friends – but some people who support Hibs. Then there’s others who support Hearts. It’s good banter before a game,” he laughed.

McGowan has already demonstrated he is no shrinking violet on the field this season. He doesn’t take the ribbing personally and is quick to issue a retort when the opportunity arrives.

“If we win tonight I’ll be straight on my phone sending a few messages out to people back home. All the SPL games that are live on TV here are shown on TV back in Australia, so it’s good for my family back home that they get to watch me in these games.” Last month, family Down Under saw him score his first Hearts goal during the high-octane New Year Edinburgh derby at Easter Road.

“That was an unbelievable feeling,” he continued, another smile etching itself across his face. “The goal wasn’t exactly a screamer, in fact I wasn’t sure if the ball was going in already or if it was going to hit the post. I just made sure by heading it in. To score at the Hearts end, with my first goal for the club, made it so special.

“The supporters have been very good to us this season. We went through a bit of a sticky patch and they’re still there. I was just happy getting my first goal in front of them and it was so much more enjoyable because it was against Hibs. The fans were tremendous, as they always are at Easter Road. That’s why our players look forward to going there.”

Celtic are certain to relish a trip to Tynecastle tonight as they seek a 16th consecutive domestic victory. The last Scottish team to beat them was Hearts, last October in Gorgie, when Rudi Skacel and Ryan Stevenson scored in an impressive 2-0 victory.

McGowan cut a somewhat disgruntled figure in the stand that afternoon as he initially struggled to establish himself under Hearts’ newly-appointed manager, Paulo Sergio. Four months on and he is enjoying a prosperous run in the first-team as deputy left-back.

“I played full-back a couple of times at Ayr but never at Hearts,” he explained. “I think I’ve coped alright.

“It’s not too much different to other defensive positions. First and foremost, you need to defend properly and then try to get forward as much as you can to support the forward players.

“It’s been an up-and-down season for me. I was playing in the team at the start, then I dropped out. I’m just making sure that I do well in every game I do play. Hopefully I continue to play in these games because facing the likes of Celtic, Rangers and Hibs at Tynecastle are always huge occasions. The boys are right up for it because these are the games you want to play in.”

The imposing figure of Danny Grainger, Hearts’ regular left-back, is looming large over McGowan.

The Englishman should be back in the squad this evening after overcoming the groin problem which has sidelined him for over four months – the exception being the Scottish Cup fourth-round tie with Auchinleck Talbot, when he attempted a premature comeback.

Grainger, at 25, is the more experienced defender compared with 22-year-old McGowan. However, the young understudy has no intention of stepping down quietly. “When Danny got injured, the manager showed a bit of faith and put me in at left-back. He thinks I’ve been doing well so he’s kept me there. He picks the team so I just need to make sure I’m hard to leave out.

“Every game is a big game for me because I need to make sure I play well every time I’m on the pitch. I need to make it hard for the manager to drop me. Obviously Danny has been fit for a couple of weeks and is getting towards full fitness. With him coming back, I need to make sure I make it as hard as possible for the manager to decide who should play.”

Hearts, who are without the suspended Ian Black tonight, can close to within three points of Motherwell with a win this evening. McGowan said the club’s intentions between now and the end of the season are clear.

“We are aiming for as many points as we can from now till the end of the season to try and catch Motherwell. We want to be in third place, and that’s not just the players but the club as a whole. That’s what we’ll be going for.”

AFTER a series of dominant displays for Hearts, Ryan McGowan is being considered for a call-up to the Australian national team. Football Federation Australia have confirmed that their head coach, Holger Osieck, will watch the 22-year-old during a scouting mission to Europe ahead of the Socceroos’ friendly with Denmark on June 2.

AS Abdessalam Benjelloun calmly slotted home Hibs' fourth goal a quiet telephone call was made from Hampden giving the go-ahead for celebratory T-shirts, marking Hibs' CIS Insurance Cup triumph to be printed.

FANS have their say

CRAIG THOMSON reckons he's come through his first season of first-team football stronger, not only as a player, but also as a person.

AS a staunch Jambo, Jim Jefferies probably wanted to party all week after Hearts triumphed in the Edinburgh derby. Few could have blamed the manager for allowing himself to be carried along on a wave of emotion.

The Thrill during the U.S. Open

Contests of sports are always exciting; beyond our imaginations because at the end of the event we gather many amazing moments and unpredictable situations that have taken place throughout the event. It is always a good thing to discuss among people about these events because it reflects everyone's passion and dedication towards sport and also towards one's nation if the country is being represented in that particular sport. The mega events provide a thrill which is enjoyed by almost every person because during these events most of the people around is discussing them half of the time and nobody likes not to be a part of discussions. We can always feel the heat around us when some special event is going in the world of sports especially when Grand Slams of tennis are taking place. One of the Grand Slams of tennis that build up a nice energy around us is the U.S Open.

U.S. Open is a part of Grand Slam that is played in a court that contains a hard surface. It is amongst the oldest tournaments of tennis and it was first played in the year 1881. It is the last Grand Slam of the year followed by other 3 Grand Slams; Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. U.S. Open is played between the August and September and it held for 2 weeks. In this period of 2 weeks 5 important contests occurs. These events are common in all Grand Slams of tennis. The events are singles of women and men, doubles of women and men; and a championship of mixed doubles. The additional tournaments that are played beside these are the championships of wheelchair, junior and senior players. These matches are equally fun to watch like other 5 main contests because it reveals the same heat and energy that can be witnessed during the 5 special contests.

Most of the times in the matches of U.S. Open the competition is pretty just due to which the game becomes more unpredictable as all contestants in a match are of almost equal caliber. As the name suggests, this tournament takes place in United States of America in Queen which is situated in New York City. Like all other Grand Slams of tennis the prize money distributed in U.S Open to the champions is humungous. The amount is around 21,000,000 U.S Dollars, this amount seems too much for just few people but after all the tennis stars work extremely hard to win this much money. Sometimes we think that what is the reason behind distributing this much money, then you should understand that tennis is a sport of an individual and it requires lots of hard work from each tennis star individually.

In every Grand Slam of tennis, including U.S Open, there is one thing that is very common along being thrilling, deviation of tennis livescore. The matches are so tough that it takes great time for tennis livescore to change but that is the real exciting part of Grand Slams.

Jessica Jane is the marketing manager of Scores Pro a best place for livescore of any sports especially free livescore, cricket livescore and football liverscore online.

Former Hibs boss John Hughes is favourite to replace Gary Bollan. Picture: SNS

Published on Monday 6 February 2012 00:00

FORMER Hibs manager John Hughes was last night set for a return to football as he emerged as the front-runner to be named the new Livingston boss after the surprise sacking of Gary Bollan and his assistant Scott Paterson.

Winning two titles in two seasons was not enough to keep Bollan in his job in West Lothian as the First Division club announced that they had decided on a “change of management” and ended the former Rangers, Dundee United and St Johnstone defender’s two-and-a-half years at the club.

The parting is believed to be based on the club’s wish to utilise more of their home-grown talent from their successful Youth Development programme, with Bollan believed to favour more experienced players.

Bollan was appointed after the club was taken over by a consortium headed by former Cowdenbeath chairman Gordon McDougall in the summer of 2009.

His new job changed almost instantly as Livingston were placed in the Third Division as a result of the financial troubles they encountered under the ownership of Angelo Massone.

Bollan led his side to the Third Division title in his first year and repeated that success in the Second Division last season. They currently sit in sixth place in the First Division, seven points ahead of bottom-placed Ayr United, although they have not won in their past five games.

A club statement said, “Although initial success has been achieved on the field, it became clear to the board more recently that a change of management is required to deliver our long-standing vision of the football club’s operations.”

Head of youth at the club, and former Cowdenbeath manager, Brian Welsh will assume responsibility for first-team matters on an interim basis. However, his time in charge will be short as he is leaving the club for the United States later this month.

McBookie.com make Hughes their 3-1 favourite to land the job, with Jim Jefferies priced at 4-1 and Jimmy Calderwood 7-1.

Foreign football: Sevilla nearer relegation zone after Villarreal loss

Published on Monday 6 February 2012 02:37

Sevilla slipped deeper into crisis when they were beaten 2-1 at home by a resurgent Villarreal on Sunday, a seventh consecutive La Liga game without a win which left the Andalusians only four points above the relegation places.

Borja Valero volleyed the visitors in front in the 20th minute at the Sanchez Pizjuan before a Jesus Navas centre was turned into his own net by Villarreal midfielder Bruno Soriano in the 33rd to make it 1-1.

Javier Camunas hit the winner nine minutes from time and the stadium erupted in booing and whistling at the final whistle as the home players and coach Marcelino trooped off down the tunnel with heads bowed.

In Italy, Serie A leaders Juventus were frustrated in front of their own fans by a Siena side who were good value for a 0-0 draw. Juve did all the attacking in a one-sided game, but they failed to create any major chances as the Tuscans defended resolutely.

Giuseppe Sannino’s side arrived with a game-plan which they enacted perfectly to earn the point which keeps them three above the relegation zone.

Despite being held at home, Juve remain at the top of the table with rivals AC Milan also failing to win as they were held to the same scoreline against Napoli at the San Siro.

Milan ended the game with ten men after Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sent off midway through the second half, but Napoli failed to make the most of their one-man advantage and are still waiting for their first win in five games.

Fabio Borini scored twice as Roma secured an emphatic 4-0 triumph over Inter Milan at the Stadio Olimpico. Juan opened the scoring in the 13th minute and Borini doubled the hosts’ lead before half-time. Borini added a third shortly after the restart and substitute Bojan Krkic capped a great afternoon for Luis Enrique’s side by notching their fourth a minute from time.

Callaway Razr HAWK Driver Give You Maximize Distance And Accuracy

Do you golf fans of Callaway ? Now how much do you know about this golf brand ?Callaway golf clubs have made another giant leap forward with Forged Composite technology in the new RAZR Hawk Driver. This new material gave engineers the freedom to position weight exactly where needed for maximized distance and accuracy. A lighter clubhead enables a longer club configuration for faster head speed, ball speed and greater distance without compromising forgiveness.
The Callaway RAZR Hawk driver is simple - it's long! Very long! Forged Composite technology uses millions of Turbostratic fibres to save even more weight and deliver golf's very first uncompromised driver!
The Driver feature the key technology that forged composite and the new cutting-edge material gave engineers the freedom to position weight exactly where needed for maximized distance, accuracy, and workability like never before, The lighter clubhead but still has an extremely high MOI that enables a longer club configuration for faster head speed, ball speed and greater distance without sacrificing forgiveness.

The sole and crown of the Driver contains more than 23 million turbostratic carbon fibres that reinforce 67% of the clubhead. This allowed engineers to precisely control thickness like never before, resulting in a clubhead that's lighter, stronger than titanium but still has an extremely high moment of inertia.

In a test done by Golf Magazine of the Driver many of the golfers that hit this driver hit it up to 20 yards further than their current driver. Even when they missed the center of the club face they were still able to hit this driver much longer than the driver they have been carrying in their bag.

A chemical milling process in the RAZR Hawk Driver selectively removes excess material for precision thickness control across the face to produce consistently high ball speeds for long distance.
The RAZR Hawk Driver has streamlined surface contours to reduce energy loss from drag during the downswing by 43% compared to the FT-9 Driver. This creates higher impact speeds for added distance.
The Callaway Razr Hawk Driver is made for both power and accuracy with its precise design using forged composite technology. This is why the engineers were able to put the weight exactly where it is necessary to create the most potential distance without giving up any accuracy.

Soccer: the Yuppie Game

Every year when the World Cup is played, the whole world goes crazy with the exception of the United States. People in other countries are willing to riot and risk body and limb just to show their loyalty to their team while we in the U.S. ask, what's the big deal? The big deal is soccer is the most popular sport in the world. Why do we not have that passion for the sport in the U.S.?

The reason we do not have that passion in the U.S. is that most people today cannot afford to pay for their child to play competitive soccer. Sure, every city in America has a recreation league in which everyone can play. The trouble with the city leagues is the fact that everyone can play. Some kids are there because their parents need a baby sitter for a couple of hours and have no interest in the game or even trying. Boys and girls are placed on the same team. Skill levels vary from fair to just standing around. The volunteer coaches have little to no experience with coaching youth soccer.

Soccer clubs seem to be the best way to learn the game of soccer. The boys and girls are separated. All kids have an interest in the game and want to play. Most of the parents have played soccer and are willing to encourage and support their kids in this endeavor. Players are placed at skill levels where they can learn and yet not be hindered by players that are too advanced or under advanced. Coaches know the game of soccer and have the ability to teach players.

The problem with soccer clubs today is the cost. With the economy today, the average family cannot afford to pay the cost for their kid to join a soccer club. Many clubs want their players to use certain equipment and wear certain uniforms. The cost of the necessary equipment to properly equip a player can be more than the average family can afford.

Isn't it a shame when kids in a third world country grow up playing and wanting to be professional soccer players and our kids here in America cannot afford to have that same opportunity? Maybe that is why there is little interest in America when the World Cup is played.

I believe we can change this view in America. Join me this year and find an under-privileged kid and sponsor him or her to join a soccer club and provide them with all the necessary equipment to play. This may sound corny, but such a simple gesture may change a kid's life. Share your wealth.

As a Viet Nam veteran and retired operating room nurse, I boast a delayed interest and passion for soccer. Growing up in the sixties, I never had the opportunity to play the sport myself. While in college working as a part-time physical director at a Boys Club, I became familiar with the game of soccer. As a father, I experienced the thrill of competition as well as the excitement of the sport through my son's participation. It is my desire/goal to assist any interested young person who wants to play soccer to have that opportunity.

Scottish Cup: Hearts 1 - 1 St Johnstone: Low skill a factor as Hearts and Saints serve up drab stalemate

By STUART BATHGATE
Published on Monday 6 February 2012 02:10

HEARTS were a goal and a man to the good with 15 minutes to play in this Scottish Cup fifth-round tie, and had the possession which should have allowed them to see the match out and take their place in the last eight.

Instead, they have it all to do again after substitute Cillian Sheridan’s late equaliser, and will need to show far more spirit in the replay if they are to go through.

Some draws are fair because neither side deserved to lose, others because neither deserved to win. This came into the latter category, and whoever eventually progresses to the quarter-finals, it can only be hoped that there is more football at McDiarmid Park tomorrow week than there was here.

Most of the skill that was on display came from David Templeton, who scored the opening goal and was a persistent threat to the St Johnstone defence. Ryan McGowan and Ian Black also played well for the home side, but on balance this Hearts team looked closer to the one which lost at Inverness 15 days earlier than to the one which won five games out of six not so long ago. Hearts’ build-up play was decent, especially during a spell in the second half in which they threatened to extend their lead, but they created few clear-cut chances. They had a plausible claim for a penalty in that spell, when Dave Mackay appeared to handle in the box, but referee Craig Thomson either failed to spot it or ruled that the contact had been unintentional.

Mackay was booked for dissent a couple of minutes after that incident, then picked up a second yellow for dangerous play with 17 minutes left. But St Johnstone were not dejected by the loss of the defender, and after Sheridan had levelled they were the livelier side.

One slight consolation for Hearts is that at least they fared better than they did in last year’s fourth-round tie, when they lost at home to the same opponents at the first time of asking. That match was a drab affair, with substitute Peter MacDonald grabbing a late winner, and this one was little better, despite being coerced into life by Templeton’s tenth-minute opener.

St Johnstone had had slightly the better of a tentative start, but the winger caught them unawares in an attack down the left. Gathering the ball on the edge of the box, he jinked inside, and shot low past a surprised-looking Peter Enckelman, who would have been entitled to expect his defence to do more to shut down a scoring opportunity. For their part, the defence would have been equally entitled to expect a more alert response from their goalkeeper.

St Johnstone then pressed forward in greater numbers than they had planned, but made little headway against a well-organised home defence, and did not create another clear opening in the first half. At the other end, Templeton continued to trouble, and David Robertson was booked after a heavy challenge on the goalscorer. Towards half-time Templeton laid on a decent chance with a cut-back, but Scott Robinson miscued his shot, sending it tumbling into Enckelman’s arms.

Sheridan came on for Robertson at the start of the second half as St Johnstone switched from 4-5-1 to 4-4-2, and within a minute he laid on a chance from which Francisco Sandaza should have equalised. The substitute’s chipped cross from the byeline was perfectly weighted, but his fellow striker just failed to get the right angle on his header and it rebounded off the crossbar with MacDonald beaten.

Murray Davidson sent a shot on the run over the bar, and Liam Craig then had a long-range attempt parried by MacDonald, as St Johnstone continued to enjoy a promising start to the second half. A second goal for Hearts at that stage still seemed likely to kill off the game, and they thought they should have been given the chance to score it from 12 yards after the Mackay incident.

Although they were not awarded a penalty, the home side were soon handed an advantage when Mackay was dismissed. When manager Paulo Sergio introduced Mehdi Taouil for Rudi Skacel it looked to be exactly the substitution Hearts needed to run down the clock – but instead of helping his team to victory, the Moroccan immediately played an unwitting role in the equaliser.

Probably the most technically gifted player on the field, Taouil gave away possession with his first touch, allowing the ball to bounce off his shin and into the path of Sandaza. The striker found Sheridan with a low ball into space, and the substitute ran on into the box before stroking the ball past MacDonald.

Belatedly waking up to the fact that there was a match to be won, Hearts finished strongly, and in the closing minutes put St Johnstone under some pressure. Their most promising move came on the verge of stoppage time when Templeton slalomed past three men in the box, but he was off balance by the time he was able to shoot, and could do no more than stab a shot straight at Enckelman.

Peter Houston still focused on winning a top-six place

By STEPHEN HALLIDAY
Published on Monday 6 February 2012 02:11

DUNDEE United manager Peter Houston savoured his team’s progress into the Scottish Cup quarter-finals, but insisted that securing a top six finish in the SPL takes precedence over trying to win the famous old trophy for the second time in three years.

Just as they did on their way to lifting the Scottish Cup in 2010 at the start of Houston’s tenure, United eliminated Rangers yesterday to book their place in today’s quarter-final draw at Hampden.

Houston was understandably satisfied with his team’s performance, first half goals by Gavin Gunning and Johnny Russell earning the 2-0 win, and is hopeful their current form will be now be rewarded with a greater return of league points. “My priority is still the top six of the SPL,” said Houston. “We are playing well just now and have done so recently without getting the victories we have deserved. I want to turn these good performances into more three points in the league. We will take what we get in the Scottish Cup.

“It was a good team performance today, especially in the first half. I was worried about Rangers being a wounded animal after the difficult week they had off the pitch and of them taking the game to us from the start. But we never gave them that opportunity.

“I was still wary of the 2-0 half-time lead, because sometimes there is a tendency to sit back and hold your 18-yard line here in that situation. That’s why I was constantly on at our defence to push up throughout the second- half.

“We didn’t play as well in the second- half, but we stopped Rangers from creating chances. We got in their faces and we stopped them playing. Today was about what we did, not about what Rangers didn’t do.”

Scottish Cup: Inverness CT 0 - 2 Celtic: Neil Lennon hails ‘brilliant’ Samaras in Celtic canter

By ANDREW SMITH
Published on Monday 6 February 2012 02:19

IN its simplicity, Celtic’s Scottish Cup fifth-round success in Inverness demonstrated the club’s burgeoning strength. It was an encounter supposed to test Neil Lennon’s side to their limits.

Yet the tie was negotiated as if a “training ground” exercise, according to losing manager Terry Butcher, with a starting line-up in which the Glasgow side’s top-scorer Anthony Stokes and, arguably, their most effective player this season, James Forrest, did not even feature.

Celtic were assisted in their canter to the quarter-finals by a calamitous display by their Highland hosts. “Horrendous mistakes” and “comedy of errors” were just a couple of the descriptive terms applied to the goals which Butcher’s team conceded. “S***” was another he deployed to sum up the performance overall. But that should not be allowed to detract from the fact that Saturday provided further evidence as to what a formidable force, in Scottish terms, Celtic have become over four months in which they have racked up 15 consecutive domestic wins and been unbeaten across 19 outings.

Some context is required. In the modern day, there is only one team which has enjoyed a longer sequence of straight victories across the various domestic tournaments. In 2001/02, Martin O’Neill’s Celtic team posted a 19-game such run. No team managed by Walter Smith, Gordon Strachan, Alex McLeish or Dick Advocaat has achieved what Lennon’s men have this season. That is surely remarkable. And it makes any bet against Celtic claiming the treble – especially in light of Rangers’ Scottish Cup ousting yesterday – assume a contrary aspect. Celtic supporters may be revelling in the potentially catastrophic financial problems of their bitter rivals – as evidenced by the fact their travelling support hammered on constantly about partying when “Rangers die” at the Caledonian Stadium. But the very poverty, on and off the field, at Ibrox could deny Lennon and his squad the appreciation that would be theirs by rights were they to do the clean sweep.

Of course, if ever there was a sizeable obstacle to Celtic’s ability to continue knocking out the wins it is surely the Tynecastle confrontation they face on Wednesday. But the Scottish Premier League leaders do so as a team transformed from the one whose last domestc loss came on their visit to Gorgie in October.

Then, all of their strikers were struggling for either fitness or form, or both. Now, all of those Lennon could select are in the finest fettle of their Celtic careers. Including Georgios Samaras, who set Celtic on the way to their latest win with a vicious, swerving drive from the left-hand edge of the area, after the ball was knocked to him in a crucial area courtesy of Ross Tokeley. “I thought Sammi’s all-round game was brilliant,” Lennon said. “He really lashed the ball into the top corner for his goal and we have been looking for him to do that for a long time because he is capable of it.”

His striker partner at the weekend, Gary Hooper, continues to look capable of doing everything expected of a top- class striker, with the possible exception of scoring headed goals – Lennon’s only gripe with him. And, having come close to scoring on a couple of occasions, he set up Celtic for a second by winning a penalty. To do so required an admirable willingness to graft for little potential reward, the Englishman chasing down a misplaced pass that David Proctor had reached first on the right-hand byline. The defender admitted later he should have then put the ball out but didn’t, allowing Hooper to hack it away from him and, as he moved away with the ball, was bumped by the Inverness player. “He initiated the contact,” Proctor said. “He was cute about it.” What Hooper did was slow down and wait for a rash challenge, which duly arrived.

The subsequent spot-kick allowed Scott Brown to make it three goals in three games, two in the form of penalties. And while proving seemingly sound in the art of netting a free hit from 12 yards shouldn’t be a big deal, it is to a Celtic side which has missed six penalties in little over a year. “He’s waited a long time to be the penalty taker and he is doing fantastically well,” Lennon said. “Once he was over the ankle surgery and pain-free, we knew he would come to the fore.”

Brown is a, sometimes, brutal competitor and his afternoon ended with the Celtic captain complaining to referee Calum Murray that he had been elbowed off the ball by his fellow armband wearer, Richie Foran. The pair had a ding-dong all day, while Gregory Tade gave Kelvin Wilson and Thomas Rogne a real physical scrap. In every department, however, Celtic stood strong and that is where they appear to have made profound progress in recent months. Lennon picked a team to play, and play long if necessary, on a difficult pitch in unforgiving wind and rain. It may be altogether different to the side he selects for Tynecastle, but he has the players and the nous to be able to win in all manner of circumstances right now, it seems.

Football news in brief: Ghana/Mali through to semis | Palsson signs for New York | Capello slams FA

Published on Monday 6 February 2012 02:46

The latest world football news in brief

GHANA advanced to the African Cup of Nations semi-finals by beating Tunisia 2-1 following goalkeeper Aymen Mathlouthi’s dreadful mistake in extra time. Mathlouthi dropped a seemingly harmless cross to allow Andre Ayew to poke home the winner in the 101st minute and see Ghana through a tense quarter-final and into a last-four meeting with Zambia.

Recalled Ghana captain John Mensah headed his team in front in the 10th minute at Stade de Franceville, but Saber Khalifa put Tunisia level in the 42nd with a header after a cross by Zouhaier Dhaouadi. Tunisia defender Aymen Abdennour was sent off late on for an elbow on Ayew in a bad-tempered finish.

Earlier in the day, Mali eliminated African Nations Cup co-hosts Gabon 5-4 on penalties in their quarter-final after the two sides had played out a 1-1 draw. Seydou Keita scored the decisive kick after Gabon’s talisman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had his effort saved.

FORMER Hibernian midfielder Victor Palsson has signed a two-year deal with Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls. The Icelandic Under-21 international was released by the Easter Road outfit earlier this month, after both parties agreed to terminate his contract, which had six months still to run.

But after a short spell on trial with Hans Bakke’s side in Mexico, Palsson has earned a deal alongside Champions League winners Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez in the Big Apple.

Palsson, writing in Icelandic, last night Tweeted: “Signed a contract for two years this morning, very pleased with it. I am now waiting for permits.” The 20-year-old joined Hibs from Liverpool in January 2011, and left Easter Road having made 34 appearances and scored one goal.

ENGLAND manager Fabio Capello has spoken out in defence of axed skipper John Terry.

Terry was removed as captain on Friday by FA chairman David Bernstein three months after Capello had been given full authority to deal with the Terry issue as he saw fit. The Italian selecting him as captain for the friendly win over Sweden, on the basis the defender was innocent of racism charges until proven guilty. Terry will not face a court hearing into allegations he used racist language to Anton Ferdinand at Loftus Road last October until July, after Euro 2012.

Interviewed by Italian broadcaster Rai 1 at Stamford Bridge yesterday, and asked whether he was in agreement with “the Federation’s decision re Terry?”, Capello replied: “No, absolutely not. I have spoken to the chairman and I have said that, in my opinion, one cannot be punished until it’s official and the court – a non-sporting court, a civil court – has made a decision to decide if John Terry has done what he has been accused of.

“I thought it was right that Terry should keep the captain’s armband. The fact that the board has decided in this way is because it falls under the competence regarding ethics.”

A new vision of Titleist VG3 irons

Titleist Japan introduces their all new Titleist VG3 Iron Set with Steel Shafts for the Japanese market. The Japanese Market Titleist VG3 Iron Set with Steel Shafts is aimed at the average golfer and improving mid capper. The strong lofts (24* 5 iron) matched with low CG in the form of tungsten weights in the sole create a higher launch and more MOI.
The new Titleist VG3 Iron is premium Japan forged by Endo which is capable of most advanced multi piece forgings. The Titleist VG3 Iron is longer from heel to toe and features small offset with a mid sized top line and sole. Trajectory is on the higher side and is made for distance and forgiveness which is typical for the average golfer target audience.

The VG3 features variable placement for the tungsten weights on the sole depending on the iron just like on the driver. The different weight placement varies the launch between different irons depending on that iron. For example the longer irons 4 and 5 feature weighting on both the toe and heel of the sole increasing MOI and distance off center shots. This makes hitting the long irons easier and increases distance. On the 6 and 7 irons, the weighting is placed more towards the center of the sole to increase launch and lower CG.

The new Titleist VG3 Iron is premium Japan forged by Endo which is capable of most advanced multi piece forgings. The VG3 is longer from heel to toe and features small offset with a mid sized top line and sole. Trajectory is on the higher side and is made for distance and forgiveness which is typical for the average golfer target audience. With a thick top line, a bit wider bottom and decent amount of offset, the Titleist VG3 Irons provide a lower COG to make the club more forgiving.

Besides, the deeper style pocket cavity, stronger lofts and variable weighting help you to find a more accurate location to reach a higher launch and fast shot. Specifically, the weights are placed in the 4, 5, 6 and 7 to manipulate forgivness and trajectory, and in the 8 to PW there is no tungsten weighting which helps raise the CG and lower the trajectory on those 'must hit accurate' short irons.

Titleist VG3 Iron Features:
True Temper Dynamic Gold Lite X100 Sensicore

The interesting thing is that the VG3 features variable placement for the tungsten weights on the sole depending on the iron just like on the driver.

The iron is most likely premium Japan forged by Endo which typically does the advanced multi piece forgings and does manufacture the VG3 driver already for Titleist as well as most of Titleist Japan's forged irons. Scottish Cup: Hearts 1 - 1 St Johnstone: Feisty clash ends in stalemate

By BARRY ANDERSON
Published on Sunday 5 February 2012 17:00

THIS William Hill Scottish Cup tie went to a replay as St Johnstone produced an unlikely equaliser after being reduced to ten men, forcing the teams to meet again at McDiarmid Park on Tuesday week.

David Templeton’s low drive put Hearts in front early in the match but, after St Johnstone’s Dave Mackay was ordered off for a second yellow card, substitute Cillian Sheridan levelled the score on 78 minutes. The game was keenly contested throughout, which should ensure a fascinating rematch in Perth.

With Marian Kello missing through injury, Hearts started Jamie MacDonald in goal against a St Johnstone team that eliminated them from last season’s Scottish Cup. The Perth side had also won both previous league encounters between the clubs this season. MacDonald was in action early to save Murray Davidson’s drive from distance, but other than that he enjoyed a tranquil opening period.

Hearts’ patient build-up play produced a chance for Ryan McGowan in the ninth minute, but Peter Enckelman held his first-time effort from 20 yards. Moments later the Australian teed up the opening goal. He collected a pass from Marius Zaliukas wide on the left and delivered it inside to Templeton. The winger, given a surprising amount of time by the St Johnstone defence, turned and scampered forwards before sending a low drive into the corner of the net.

The balance of play was even throughout the first half, although Scott Robinson might have doubled Hearts’ advantage minutes before the interval. Templeton’s dribbling run on the left ended with a low delivery which the teenager mishit, allowing the ball to loop harmlessly into Enckelman’s arms.

St Johnstone began the second half in emphatic fashion when Francisco Sandaza headed Sheridan’s cross against MacDonald’s crossbar. Davidson then sent a first-time shot spinning high into the Roseburn Stand from Liam Craig’s cutback. It was clear that the visitors were playing with greater purpose as MacDonald repelled a vicious 35-yard volley from Craig.

Hearts resisted that concerted pressure and appealed for a penalty on 58 minutes when Mackay appeared to handle the ball whilst challenging McGowan in the air. Referee Craig Thomson remained impassive but did hand the hosts a significant advantage when he reduced St Johnstone to ten men 17 minutes from full-time. Mackay, having been booked for dissent on 61 minutes, was issued a second yellow card and subsequent red for high feet whilst challenging Templeton.

Perhaps the adversity galvanised St Johnstone, who equalised seconds later. Sandaza’s threaded through ball found Sheridan galloping in behind the Hearts defence. The striker ignored vociferous claims for offside from Hearts to eyeball MacDonald and stroke the ball beyond the goalkeeper.

As expected, Hearts pressed forward in numbers during the closing stages but could not find a winning goal. The teams will now do battle again on Valentine’s Day with no love lost during this encounter.

Hearts (4-2-3-1): MacDonald; Hamill, Webster, Zaliukas, McGowan; Robinson, Mrowiec; Skacel (Taouil 77), Black, Templeton (Driver 90); Elliott. Subs: Ridgers, Barr, Glen.

St Johnstone (4-4-1-1): Enckelman; Mackay, McCracken, Anderson, C Davidson; Croft (Keatings 84), M Davidson (Millar 78), Morris, Craig; Robertson (Sheridan 46); Sandaza. Subs: Mannus, Oyenuga.

Referee: Craig Thomson.

Attendance: 9185.
