“There has been so much going on today, I need to digest it all to get a full picture of where we stand,” said Murray.

Earlier, Murray gave an interview to TalkSport in which he countered claims made in the course of a lengthy statement from Dave King, understood to be part of his Blue Knights consortium, that it was “inevitable” Rangers would suffer liquidation as a consequence of being unable to exit administration through a Company Voluntary Agreement (CVA).

“From my point of view and talking to the administrators, I’m certainly not working on the basis that liquidation is inevitable,” Murray said.

“A CVA is in the best interests of the club and that can change the club,” he said.

“We need to settle our debts but at least that enables the club to emerge out of administration into a new form.

“CVA basically interns the company and the club in its present state and is a negotiated settlement with the creditors that Rangers have got and would enable Rangers to emerge from administration.

“I’m working with administrators flat out on a CVA solution to this particular issue. Any insolvency process is very complicated. The administrators are three weeks into the process and working through some pretty complex legal situations.

“But I’ve met with them twice and they’ve been pretty helpful in terms of giving information.”

Murray might now consider them unhelpful in attempting to force his hand hastily.

There is still the possibility that Brian Kennedy, the owner of Sale Sharks rugby club, could come forward with an offer for the club over the next couple of days. The Scot, who was rebuffed by Hibernian in his first attempt to get involved in Scottish football, has already declared his interest in the Ibrox club and has had discussions with the administrators. But he has said that he would not be interested in becoming part of a consortium, and would step aside if he felt that Murray’s proposal is a better option for the club. “But if they are not able to do so, then that is possibly where we might have an interest,” he has said.

Having arrived at Easter Road only two months ago, Francomb has already witnessed a whirlwind of change at the club. When he arrived, he was expected to challenge Towell and Michael Hart for the right-back role; now, Hart has left, and Francomb and new man Doherty are front-runners for the position.

“The gaffer has brought in a lot of new faces but everyone seems to have gelled really well together in the changing room and out on the pitch,” said Francomb. “I think we’re heading in the right direction now.

“When I first got the call, I was just excited to come up and play for Hibs. A couple of weeks in, the gaffer has decided he has to strengthen the squad and bring in another five or six players for us. That’s what he’s done, and it’s working out well for us.

“There’s competition all over the pitch now. That’s good for the squad, I think. I was on the bench against Celtic and was obviously disappointed, but I have started the last three or four games since then. It happens in football – there are ups and downs – but you have to fight for your place here and I think that’s good for the team.

“I’m one of the new players who has come in – and helped change the club, hopefully.

“This season is all about having a good season here at Hibs, making sure we stay in the league, obviously, and hopefully, we can win the cup. That’s our objective: make sure we stay safe in the league, hopefully move up a couple of positions if we get a good string of results, and if we can go all the way in the cup, that would be excellent.

“Recently, we’ve been playing really well – apart from the Celtic game. Now, we’ve started to get a few points and the ball rolling, and the only way we are looking is to go forward and climb up the table even more.”

While there remains a natural pressure to perform well, Hibs, having gradually stretched their advantage over rivals Dunfermline, who lie bottom of the SPL, to four points, feel increasingly less the burden of gaining points. “Ayr are obviously just going to make it as hard as they can for us at home,” he said. “It’s the cup – anything can happen – but we just have to be professional and if we play how we have been playing, we should win the game. I’ve heard of the ground and the fans and all that goes with it. That’s what happens in the cup – you go to these places, but you’ve just got to be professional and make sure you come back with a win and get into the semi-final.”

THIRTY-ONE unbroken years of participation in European football will come to an end for Rangers next season, in whatever shape or form they exist.

The latest in a seemingly endless series of blows to the pride and stature of the ailing Scottish champions was confirmed by administrators Duff and Phelps last night as they admitted there was no chance of meeting Uefa licensing requirements by the 31 March deadline.

“As regards the club playing in European competitions next season,” said co-administrator Paul Clark last night, “there is no realistic prospect of the club being able to fulfil its obligations prior to the 31 March deadline set by Uefa. There are four main reasons for this and they lie in the stewardship of the club prior to going into administration. First, as we have stated from the outset, the likelihood of the club being able to emerge successfully from administration before this deadline as indicated by the chairman [Craig Whyte] was, at best, optimistic given the perilous financial situation at the club at the time of insolvency.

“Second, the company accounts cannot realistically be signed off by auditors in a manner that would meet the criteria required by the footballing authorities. Even if the audited financial statements are issued prior to the end of March 2012, we would expect them to be qualified by the auditors such that under Uefa requirements the club will have to satisfy a going concern test confirming how it will continue to be funded until the end of next season. Without knowing who will be the owner of the club at 31 March, it is impossible to provide suitable comfort in this respect.

“Thirdly, under Uefa regulations the club must have paid or come to a satisfactory settlement with all social taxes that were outstanding at 31 December 2011. We estimate those social taxes [being PAYE and NIC] to be at least £5m. We cannot now see a scenario where those taxes will have been paid or compromised to the satisfaction of HMRC by the end of March 2012.

“The final major hurdle is that the club must have paid or compromised all of its outstanding “Football Creditors” prior to the deadline of 31 March 2012. That issue is again extremely unlikely.”

A one-year absence from Europe, of course, could simply be the thin end of the wedge for Rangers. In the event of liquidation, which director Dave King believes is inevitable, they would be barred from European competition for at least a further two years under Uefa rules.

Co-administrator Clark challenged King’s comments and expressed his continuing optimism that Rangers will not be liquidated. “There has, perhaps inevitably, been speculation about Rangers Football Club facing liquidation. As we have stated previously, we remain very confident that Rangers will not cease to exist and the team will continue to play at Ibrox.

“If a Company Voluntary Arrangement is not possible for any particular reason, any buyer of the club and its assets would complete that purchase through a sale by the administrators allowing the football club to continue to operate with the old company then being placed into liquidation prior to dissolution.

“We are, however, doing our best to ensure the company trades viably during administration and this will require a rigorous cost-cutting programme. Our preferred option remains to reach a point where a Company Voluntary Arrangement is reached and the club can emerge from administration as a viable business within its existing corporate shell.

“As stated, there is a possibility that, if a new buyer is identified, a financial case may be made to sell the business and assets of the old company, but that is not our preferred approach at this time.”

The administrators are understood to have held a meeting yesterday with senior figures at HMRC at which they formed the impression the tax authorities will consider a CVA positively, both in terms of the short-term liabilities left by Craig Whyte and the imminent First Tier Tax tribunal ruling on the “big tax case”. But if Rangers were to emerge from administration as a “phoenix” or “newco” company, serious obstacles would have to be overcome to participate in both domestic and European top flight football. “A CVA is still very possible and the more likely route to achieve the greater value for creditors,” said co-administrator Dave Whitehouse.

“We have to look at the time constraint and if it is possible to conclude a transaction within a very short timetable, simply because we can’t deliver the cost-cuts necessary to keep the fabric of the business in place, then we would also have to look at selling into a ‘newco’ scenario.

“That brings with it risks in terms of the level of European activity in the coming years and also sanctions from domestic football which would need to be subject to negotiation.

“If we were to look to a very early sale of the business that is probably a more likely scenario.

“What we don’t want to do is mix the terminology here and start to portray liquidation as a process which creates the cessation of the business. The liquidation will wind up a business following the sale of the business activities into a ‘newco’.

“So, in any scenario, we would still envisage that Rangers Football Club could play football and operate as a football team. We have always said that liquidation is a possible scenario. The preferred scenario from our perspective, both in terms of the return to creditors and a platform for retaining an on-going continuous business, is through a CVA.”

Hibee Hollie makes bad boy so proud

In the early 1980s, Bobby Thomson was the bad boy of Scottish football, a controversial figure who created football headlines for all the wrong reasons.

A maverick with a self- destructive streak to match, Thomson appeared impervious to discipline and his uncompromising style earned him a fearsome reputation.

The man with a fiery temper and unpredictable behaviour was made an example of by the authorities and received a mammoth seven-month ban after an altercation with a linesman during a Hibs match against St Johnstone in 1983.

Now, the 56-year-old care worker is simply a proud father, watching from the sidelines as daughter Hollie prepares for a new season with Hibernian Ladies. The pair are the only father and daughter to have represent the club at senior level.

Signed from Middlesbrough by Pat Stanton in 1982, he played 78 games for Hibs, his last game the New Year derby against Hearts in 1985. He said: “I loved it at Hibs and I was ready to sign a new contract with them that would’ve taken me to the end of my career. The manager wanted me to sign but he was soon sacked and John Blackley took over.

“John and I never saw eye-to-eye. I knew it was time to move on because there will only ever be one winner when a player and manager don’t get on.

“Nonetheless I loved my time with Hibs and I couldn’t be happier than to see Hollie pulling on that famous shirt. Not many fathers can say their daughters have gone on to play for the same team they did, so it’s a terrific honour for us both.”

Hollie was too young to have witnessed Bobby playing at his peak, however, even from a tender age she wanted nothing more than to be a footballer like her father. Refusing to let the old stereotypes of woman’s football stand in her way, Hollie proved time and again that she was a match for the boys she played against.

Bobby recalled: “Hollie has been football crazy from the day she was born and has only ever wanted to be a football player. She would be out from morning-to-night kicking the ball about, working on her skills by hitting it off a wall and controlling it. I never really gave her any advice because she’s such a strong character and was determined to do it all on her own.

“When we would go down the park and watch the boys playing she would tell me that she was as good as them, and she was. Hollie would join in and play with anyone such was her love for the game and I’m very proud of what she has achieved in the women’s game.

“She still plays with the same enthusiasm that she had at eight or nine and that’s key.”

Hollie’s story follows a similar path to a lot of girls with a love of the beautiful game. At ten she was informed she could no longer play with the boys and would have to find a girl’s team if she wanted to continue in the game.

She quickly attracted the attention of some big clubs and had spells with Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers, Burnley, Everton and Hamilton Academical before joining Hibs in 2008. The 25-year-old midfielder has won nine Scotland caps and said: “I always strive to get better and when Hibs asked me to join I didn’t think twice about it. Hibernian is a big and very successful club and I wanted to be part of that.

“This is my fourth year with the club and it has been fantastic to be part of it all, challenging for cups and league titles every year.

“The aim is for more women’s teams to become professional, not just in Scotland, but all around the world because, in my opinion, some of the women are equally as gifted as the men.”

Hibs Ladies kick off their season this weekend, away to Celtic on Sunday, in the first round of the Premier League Cup.

SIR David Murray has vowed to vigorously defend himself against former Ibrox director Dave King’s threat to pursue him for £20 million for not fully disclosing Rangers’ financial position 12 years ago.

King, who invested £20 million in the Ibrox club in 2000, revealed he has made a claim for the same sum on the basis of non-disclosure by the then chairman, who recently came under fire from another former director, Hugh Adam, for allegedly issuing secret “second” contracts to players.

King did not specify what information he believed had been kept from him. However, he describes himself as feeling “deceived” – and invites other shareholders to take a similar course of action in the courts. “David Murray will no doubt argue to the contrary and the merits of this will be dealt with in due course in the appropriate forum,” he stated.

A spokesperson for the Murray Group confirmed that evidence of King’s action had not yet been received, but “in the event that he [King] actually lodges a claim, we would vigorously defend it”.

The spokesperson pointed out that King, who is currently the subject of a long-running investigation into his own tax affairs in South Africa, was privy to the financial details of the club throughout the period of his directorship.

King, who is based in South Africa, was back in Scotland a fortnight ago and met with representatives from Rangers’ administrators, Duff and Phelps. Both he and fellow non-executive director Paul Murray proposed an alternative £25m buy-out of the club in May, just prior to Craig Whyte’s ill-fated takeover.

King has pledged to reinvest “any benefit” he receives from his claim against David Murray in a “restructured” Rangers, on the proviso that he passes the Scottish Football Association’s “fit and proper” person’s test – and that he wins the case.

King visited Murray’s offices in Edinburgh on 23 February in order to elicit more information on Whyte’s buy-out, and met with Murray Group director Mike McGill. However, he deliberately avoided Murray himself and has not spoken to the former Rangers owner since May last year.

However, King has begun proceedings which could see him cross paths with Murray again, in court. A statement released yesterday afternoon by the Murray Group rejected King’s claim that he was not fully briefed on all aspects of the club’s finances.

“We note with some interest, and much incredulity, Dave King’s press statement,” it said.

“It is difficult to understand his motives, given he has been a director of Rangers Football Club since the year 2000.

“Throughout the period of his directorship, Dave King has attended and participated in regular board meetings, including those approving the annual audited accounts, received board papers quarterly, had full access to the executive management of the club and been privy to the same detailed financial and commercial information as every other board member,” said the spokesperson.

“In the event that he actually lodges a claim, we would vigorously defend it.”

King, who was the only director from the previous regime still on the board when the club went into administration last month, also stated his belief that Rangers will not be able to come through administration and that liquidation was “inevitable.”

RANGERS’ administrators are looking to secure a swift sale of the club after failing to agree cost-cutting measures with the playing staff, Duff and Phelps announced today.

Discussions over how to make savings have ended without a resolution which would devalue the playing staff “on terms that will preserve the value in the business”, joint administrator David Whitehouse said.

Whitehouse said in a statement: “We are announcing today we are accelerating the sale of Rangers Football Club.

“The club is in a perilous financial situation and that should not be under-estimated.

“Regrettably, we have been unable to agree cost-cutting measures with the playing staff on terms that will preserve value in the business.

“We understand the players’ position as the scale of wage cuts required to achieve these savings without job losses were very substantial indeed.

“In view of this, we are faced with a situation of making redundancies within the playing staff on such a scale that would materially erode the value of the playing squad.

“We are striving to strike a balance where cost-cutting measures can be implemented but do not destroy the fabric of the playing squad to the extent that it will inhibit the prospect of a sale.”

The administrators, who took control on February 14, are seeking to make savings of £1million per month.

Duff and Phelps had set Monday as a final deadline to reach a consensual agreement but they reconvened yesterday morning to discuss another proposal from players and talks resumed today.

Unless a buyer is found quickly, administrators will have no choice but to make the necessary cuts which would leave Rangers in danger of failing to fulfil their fixtures for the remainder of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League season.

Whitehouse said: “No-one should be in any doubt that in the absence of sufficient cost-cutting measures or receipt of substantial unplanned income, the club will not be able to fulfil its fixtures throughout the remainder of the season.

“As a result, we are expediting the sale process and over the next few days we will be holding discussions with prospective purchasers who have declared their interest. “The manager, Ally McCoist, will play an integral part in these discussions.

“If, however, it becomes apparent that the sale process cannot be accelerated there will be no choice but to implement very severe cost cutting measures at the club.”

ONE OF Scottish football’s most senior figures has launched a scathing attack on Rangers chairman Craig Whyte after it was announced he is to vacate his executive role at the beleaguered club as part of a cost-cutting drive.
