Smashing sixth seeded Samantha Stosur in the semi-final at French Open Women's Singles 2012, World No. 21 Sara Errani became a surprise finalist at Roland Garros. She is just one step away from her maiden Grand Slam for which she has to encounter second seeded Maria Sharapova who has been to the final by defeating fourth seeded Petra Kvitova from Czech Republic in the semi-final.
This will be an impressive match to watch because Sharapova is in full swing in this tournament and her experience is an additional advantage for her while Italian Errani who was considered as an underrated player has given an impressive performance level throughout the tournament and on her way to this final, she has outsmarted a number of top seeded players.
Looking into her long run in this tournament, she started the tournament as an underrated player but came into the limelight when she started ditching the top rated players. Wins over Grand Slam champions like Svetlanta Kuznetsova and Ana Ivanovic were her initial hurdles which she overcame quite easily and then, tenth seeded Angelique Kerber was her first target in the qualifying round whom she clashed down. Then Errani ousted the US Open Champion Stosur in 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 in the semi-final to be a deserved contender for this Grand Slam.
She has never been to the qualifying round in major tournaments except for the Australian Open 2012 where she made into the quarter finals. Compared to 5' 8" tall Stosur, Errani's 5' 4½"height sometimes becomes a problem for her. So she opted for long handled racket to smash her tall height opponents and that she proved as well.
Starting with Wimbeldon in 2004 to US Open in 2006 and Australian Open in 2008, Maria Sharapova has travelled a long way in her tennis career. Winning this French Open will make her the 10th woman in the tennis world to complete one cycle of Grand Slam. Beaten up by Victoria Azarenka in the Australian Open 2012 Final in a close margin was a shock for her which she does not want to repeat in her maiden French Open Final.
Defeating Petra Kvitova in a straight set 6-3, 6-3 has made her way to the final. She is already in the run to regain her World No. 1 position but facing an inconsistent player like Errani is quite challenging for her. Errani's surprising shots are impressive to see but quite difficult to tackle. So it is quite obvious that this Grand Slam final will be quite thrilling because either one will have to face a challenging opponent to give the winning smile holding the much coveted and maiden French Open Grand Slam trophy.
