History of Real Madrid Barcelona- The El Clasico

Numerous football events takes place every year, but el clasico has its own charm. This is an event between Real Madrid and Barcelona. There are plenty of professional rivalries between different football teams such as Manchester United vs Arsenal, Everton vs Liverpool, etc. Whenever these teams clash, there is always a high level of excitement among the fans and the spectators. Similarly, there is a great level of excitement whenever there is an encounter between Real Madrid Barcelona. Huge number of spectators buy the tickets of the match and millions of people stay hooked to the television to witness the encounter.

However, the competition between these two teams is not just a match, it is something more. You will understand this if you get to know the history between the cities of Barcelona and Madrid.
Madrid was an ally of Gen. Franco during the Civil War. On the other hand, Barcelona was not in favor of the policy of Franco and wanted independence. Franco wanted to unify the nation and thus cancel the independence and traditions of Barcelona. In fact, he also wanted to diminish Castilian Spanish, the native language of Barcelona.
Barcelona was even ordered to lose game intentionally against Madrid as per the orders of Franco and the result of that match was Barcelona and Madrid 11. It was enough for the officials and they suspended and fined the team of Barcelona. On the other hand, Madrid raced ahead steadily and won five titles of European Cup.

Real Madrid retained its powerful position as the popular team, but in 1961 Barcelona bounced back and caused elimination of Real Madrid from the European Cup. The rivalry between the teams reach its peak this time.

Barcelona also not involved them with the commercial aspects such as sponsorships and all, which the other teams including Real Madrid was doing and making lot of money. Barca considered it as their glory to the retain the spirit of the game.

The rivalry continues since years. The fans react strongly if the teams swap players between them. One such prominent instance was transfer of Louis Figo in 2000 to Real Madrid for a huge sum. The fans of Barcelona were disgusted and thrown rubbish in him during matches.

Nowadays, this rivalry is providing benefits to the sponsors and event managers. Crowd are excitement about this tie and the tickets gets sold off like hot cakes. Similar instance was noticed in the recently held El Clasico where Barcelona came from behind and won the game 3-1 agaist Real Madrid. At present, both the teams have two best players in the world trying to retain the glory of their respecting teams- Christiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid and Lionel Messi for Barcelona.
