It's not often that you hear "skin care" and "football" in the same sentence. However, Nivea for Men recently sponsored a unique contest called "The Great Football Experiment." The concept was simple: prove the theory that superior training and preparation can make all the difference in the world by taking a Sunday League football team and have them prepare for many weeks with world-class FA coaching and support.
After a nationwide search, as well as a national vote, Ivory FC, an amateur Sunday-League team from Brentwood, was selected for the experiment.
Over the course of many weeks, the players trained with such FA coaching legends as Terry Venables and Ray Wilkins, among others. Their goal was to get the players ready to face off against a team of British football legends that included Ray Parlour, Clive Allen, Rob Jones and Luther Blissett.
On top of coaching assistance, Nivea also provided the Ivory Football Club players with top physical trainers and nutritionists in order to ensure their bodies operate at peak performance.
After weeks of intense training, the game finally came off on the 28th of November at Victoria RD. Since Ivory FC had been preparing for the match since May, they were as ready as they were ever going to be. The preparation was obvious, just not quite at first. In fact, for the first two minutes of the game, Ivory FC didn't have a touch. The momentum changed when Craig Harrington moved past an on-rusher and placed the ball in the corner to give the boys a 1-0 lead.
You can track Ivory FC's progress via the Nivea Skincare UK website, NiveaforMen and on Youtube.
A few of the British legends were victims of some rough tackles and this only emboldened the amateur standouts. By halftime, Ivory had held onto their one-point lead. A free kick at the start of the second half was driven home by Peter Harlow to give Ivory FC a 2-0 lead. With the legends frustrated, they could never really find their way back into the game and the underdogs won 2-0.
All in all the "The Great Football Experiment" by Nivea not only proved that superior training and conditioning can mean all the difference in the world, it also gave fans of British football a great underdog story. The team has a long road ahead of them if they are going to challenge the England Legends. Its a great opportunity for both the team and "Nivea" to illustrate the importance of proper preparation.
