The name tennis is a misnomer. Although the name suggests that the windscreen is installed to obstruct wind flow in the tennis court, in reality, it causes minimal interference to wind flow. The main function of the tennis windscreen is to provide an even dark background to help players track the tennis ball.
While boosting the visibility of the tennis ball is the primary function of the tennis, its secondary function includes forming a barrier to wind, sunlight, dirt and moisture. Usually are installed on either side of a tennis to provide the players the privacy needed to help them concentrate in the game.
Types of tennis windscreens
Tennis windscreens are usually made of polyester, polyethylene or polypropylene.
Polyester windscreen
Polyester is the most popular material used for constructing tennis windscreens. Compared with the other windscreen variants, the polyester usually carry a higher price tag. They are usually customized to fit fence panels of different dimensions in the tennis courts. The best quality polyester come with vinyl coating. They are highly durable. Despite prolonged exposure to corrosive weather elements, the vinyl coated polyester tennis are least likely to wear and tear. Polyester is fade resistant, retaining the original color of the throughout its life.
Polypropylene tennis court windscreen
If you cannot afford a polyester tennis windscreen owing to its high price, polypropylene can be a cost-effect alternative. They can cause significant opacity,providing an appropriate dark background for tracking the ball in the court. Just as polyester, polypropylene can also be customized to fit the fence panel. Although polypropylene tennis court windscreens are not as durable as the polyester, nonetheless, they enjoy moderate lifespan. They can be easily installed in tennis. However, polypropylene tends to unravel when cut. Moreover, its color tends to fade over time.
Unlike polypropylene windscreen, polyethylene does not ravel when cut. They are fade resistant. However, it can be easily damaged when exposed to extreme heat. Polyethylene is the only windscreen material without hemmed and grommeted edge.
Polyethylene tennis court windscreen
Windscreens made of polyethylene are recognized for their strength and durability. They are usually cheaper than polyester and polypropylene. In case a small area of the windscreen is damaged,instead of replacing the entire only the damaged part can be replaced. Unlike polypropylene, polyethylene does not ravel when cut. They are fade resistant. However, it can be easily damaged when exposed to extreme heat. Polyethylene is the only windscreen material without hemmed and grommeted edge.
