This straight set win in 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday helped second seeded tennis champion to be close towards another Grand Slam championship title. Ending the match in just one hour and 14 minutes, she set her next match against World No. 4 Petra Kvitova.
Sharapova has been in excellent form this season which has lead her close to maiden Grand Slam title in this clay court. Throughout this tournament, she only faced a tough challenge against Dominika Cibulkova but in the rest of the matches, she has mostly got through an easy win. In this match, when they were in court number one, Kaia Kanepi was in 2-0 lead but then Sharapova did not spare a single chance for her opponent and ended the match in straight victory.
From the other match, Petra Kvitova defeated unseeded Yaroslava Shvedova in 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 and made her straight to the semi-final of Women's Singles in French Open 2012 where second seeded Sharapova is waiting to face her in the semi-final match. Shvedova has been quite talented and efficient to be in the quarter-final and her intense effort was clear throughout the match. The fourth seeded had to literally struggle to give the winning smile. This was Shvedova's second appearance in the French Open quarter final and she is also the only contender from Kazakh in tennis history who has reached the quarter final level of such a big tournament. She has been in full swing in this tournament and gave a superb innings by winning seven successive matches. Even she defeated seventh seeded Li Na in an outstanding way. So, tackling this player was quite a tough job for Kvitova.
Now, her next challenge is Sharapova whom she had encountered five times earlier. In their previous five meetings, Sharapova is the leading lady with 3-2 score line. In this year, the outcome of their meeting in Sttutgart was again in favour of the Russian and that too in straight set. However in previous records of Grand Slams, both have ousted each other. In 2010, Wimbeldon Final, Kvitova became the champion when she defeated this Russian but in this year's Australian Open, second seeded dumped the fourth seeded in the semi-final. So both are competent enough to smash the other one but in this tournament, Sharapova is in a favorable position because of her impressive form throughout this tournament. About the Author
