Super Bowl XLVI will be the 46th annual edition of the Super Bowl in American football, and the 42nd annual championship game of the modern-era National Football League (NFL). It will be held on February 5, 2012 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Normally, the Super Bowl is televised on one of the four major television networks--and that's it. If you didn't have a TV, you didn't watch the Super Bowl. Well… maybe you went somewhere else. Additionally, we aren't sure yet whether there will be any geographical restrictions to watching the Super Bowl live online via the league's website or NBC's. The online broadcast could gain a huge audience of users outside of North America who want to watch the game live. In Europe, the broadcast will be in the early hours of the morning.
Needless to say there are many predictions of who is going to win and there are many websites that offer pro football picks. Fantasy football competitions are great fun with some even offering prizes for the highest scorer.
"Whether it's just for a quarter if somebody has to run out to the store to get something they forgot, now they can stay connected to the game," Hans Schroeder, the NFL's senior vice president of media strategy and development, told The Associated Press. "With such a big television audience, it will be interesting to see the expanded reach."
The game was created as part of a merger agreement between the NFL and its then-rival league, the American Football League (AFL). It was agreed that the two leagues' champion teams would play in an AFL-NFL World Championship Game until the merger was to officially begin in 1970. After the merger, each league was redesignated as a "conference", and the game was then played between the conference champions.
Because of its high viewership, commercial airtime during the Super Bowl broadcast is the most expensive of the year. Due to the high cost of investing in advertising on the Super Bowl, companies regularly develop their most expensive advertisements for this broadcast. As a result, watching and discussing the broadcast's commercials has become a significant aspect of the event. In addition, many popular singers and musicians have performed during the event's pre-game and halftime ceremonies because of the exposure.
Spokespeople for the NFL have declined to comment on the report, while Madonna's representatives told Entertainment Weekly that there is "nothing to confirm at this point".
Black Eyed Peas performed at the event's half-time show last year.
If sources hold true, Madonna would be the first female entertainer to headline the half time show since Janet Jackson in 2004.
Recent halftime performers have included the Black Eyed Peas, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. Madonna would in theory have a blank canvas to showcase her catalog of work, from the "Like a Virgin" days to her most recent, electric-hop record, "Hard Candy."
