John Terry ruled out for Chelsea in week of court case

Published on Tuesday 31 January 2012 01:15

JOHN Terry was last night ruled out of Chelsea’s Barclays Premier League game at Swansea in the week the court case begins into allegations he racially abused Anton Ferdinand.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas announced Terry would not travel to the Liberty Stadium tonight after aggravating an injury to his right knee first suffered in this month’s FA Cup win over Portsmouth. The Swansea match takes place less than 24 hours before proceedings begin at Westminster Magistrates Court over whether Terry used a racist slur against QPR defender Ferdinand back in October, a charge he denies.

Chelsea insisted the decision not to risk Terry tomorrow was purely on medical grounds after he played through the pain in Saturday’s fourth-round cup win at Rangers, a match the defender was determined not to miss.

Terry has been suffering with fluid in the knee since colliding with a post during the 8 January third-round victory against Portsmouth but is expected to be fit for Sunday’s league clash with Manchester United.

Villas-Boas told Chelsea TV: “It’s just a bone oedema that he has been carrying for some time since he collided with a post. This stops him a little bit. It’s nothing serious but something to keep an eye on. He should be okay for Man United.”

Terry’s absence will almost certainly see a debut for January signing Gary Cahill alongside David Luiz. Petr Cech looks certain to captain the side, with Villas-Boas confirming Frank Lampard was not quite ready to return from the calf problem that ruled him out on Saturday.

He said: “Frank’s rehabilitation is going well. We are trying to reintroduce him gradually to the first-team activities. Frank felt that it was still a little bit soon to come back and went on to work with the physios, so hopefully after Swansea we will get him ready for the Man United game.”

Terry’s absence breaks up the centre-back partnership that has been together for the whole of the last seven matches. Chelsea were beginning to reap the benefits of that stability, keeping four successive clean sheets for the first time this season.

By not travelling to Swansea, Terry misses out on what would have been a welcome handshake from every member of the Swansea team, something he was denied at Loftus Road on Saturday. That could also be a problem before Sunday’s match against United if Rio Ferdinand were to start at Stamford Bridge.

Reports suggest Ferdinand is prepared to shake Terry’s hand, something younger brother Anton was apparently not prepared to do this weekend.

Chelsea have a chance to dent United’s title bid on Sunday but, having declared his own side out of the championship equation, Villas-Boas is more interested in cutting the five-point gap to third-placed Tottenham, starting tonight.

Johnson Wagner rallies to win Sony Open (2)

They were all chasing Wagner, who seized control with a 9-iron into the 15th that was pin-high, just off the green. He rolled that in for birdie, and then didn't come close to making a mistake until he nearly missed a tap-in par on the 18th.TaylorMade R11 TP Fairway Wood
Coming into the year, Wagner had only seven top 10s - including two wins - in 139 tournaments. He had never made it to the Tour Championship and played in only four majors.
But what a transformation. Along with his work ethic, he began jotting notes and goals into a notebook, using the green cover he received in 2008 from his lone Masters appearance.
With respect to his mustache - Frazar made a ``Magnum P.I.'' reference at Kapalua - the biggest change with Wagner was his attitude.
``I love being out here. There's so many great players,'' he said. ``But why are they any better? Why are the people in the top 50 better than me? I've always struggled a little bit with believing in myself.'' TaylorMade R11 TP Fairway Wood
As for that mustache getting so much attention?
Wagner didn't shave during Thanksgiving and kept the mustache.
``Kind of made a deal with myself in December that if I was to get into the Masters, then I was going to keep the mustache for at least this year,'' he said. ``Everybody said, `Oh, is it a Movember mustache? Well, it's December, time to shave it.' I said, Look, this is not a one-month mustache. This is potentially a 10-year mustache.'
``So I think it's going to be around for a while.''
Jeff Maggert and Matt Every, tied for the lead going into the last day, both collapsed early. Every was 4 over through six holes and rallied for a 72. Maggert missed a slew of short putts and shot 74.
Considering all the attention Every received this week - his comments about his marijuana possession arrest two years ago his awkward television interview - he said Saturday night that ``I'm just ready to get TaylorMade R11 TP Fairway Wood over with.''
And that he did. He was tied for the lead with Maggert, and quickly spent the day in hopeless pursuit.
Every made bogey from the bunker on the first hole, drove into the water at No. 2, three-putted for bogey at No. 4 and three-putted again from 4 feet on the sixth hole for a double bogey.
Maggert was scrambling from the start, too, and while he holed par putts of 8 and 15 feet on the opening two holes, it caught up with him.
They were still in the hunt at the turn - and so was everyone else.
PGA champion Keegan Bradley hit 8-iron into about 6 feet for eagle on the par-5 ninth, creating a five-way tie for the lead along with Maggert, Every, Frazar and Wagner. TaylorMade R11 TP Fairway Wood
Bradley fell back when his long bunker shot sailed 20 yards over the 10th green, turning a birdie chance into a bogey. Frazar hit his easier bunker shot on the 10th to a foot to take the outright lead, only to be joined a short time later by Wagner, who birdied the ninth. Michael Thompson joined them briefly in the lead until a bogey on the 17th.
Wagner was the only player who kept it going.

Golf-Rose has the stomach for a fighting effort at Torrey

"I am happy with where I am at for my first tournament of the year," Englishman Rose told Reuters after mixing five birdies with a lone bogey on a breezy day of sunshine at Torrey Pines. Callaway RAZR Hawk Driver

"This bug forced me to be patient, it forced me not to get too far ahead of myself and it forced me to do a lot of good things mentally that will set a good foundation for the rest of the year.

"I feel like I have accepted the good and the bad out there pretty well this week and that's a good formula for the rest of the year."

World number 16 Rose, who won his third PGA Tour title during last year's FedExCup playoffs at the elite BMW Championship, conceded he had very nearly pulled out of this week's event before the opening round. Callaway RAZR Hawk Driver

He first felt sick on Wednesday afternoon, lost a lot of fluid that night and called a doctor first thing on Thursday morning.

"I really thought I was going to have to withdraw," Rose said. "I couldn't walk around my first tournament of the year throwing up all the way around.

"But luckily that stopped in the early hours of the morning and then I just tried to get myself as refreshed as I could to tee off at 10."

BATTLING ROUND

After having two litres of fluid pumped into him intravenously, Rose went on to card a one-under-par 71 on the tricky South Course in the first round but it was a battle for him all day. Callaway RAZR Hawk Driver

"My legs went around the turn but we battled but my caddie was great. There was enough food in the bag for us to go to the North Pole," he smiled. We were fully kitted out for every eventuality.

"So we managed to survive. And today wasn't much better, to be honest with you. I went back to my room for a couple of hours after the round but I feel a bit better now."

Rose, speaking just before he began to hit a few practice chips and putts on a glorious evening at Torrey Pines, said the uncertainty of the stomach bug was his biggest concern going into the weekend. Callaway RAZR Hawk Driver

"It's just the unnerving nature of not knowing what your body's going to do," he added. "I am hoping if the body settles down, I won't feel too bad.

Jordan looks for winning run by Spurs

Published on Tuesday 31 January 2012 01:08

SPURS first team coach Joe Jordan believes that the Londoners can resurrect their title bid in the next few weeks, but admits his players must show more consistency and ruthlessness if they are to put themselves back in contention – starting tonight against Wigan.

Spurs are 25-1 with some bookmakers to lift their first championship since 1961 and Jordan admits not having the experience of reigning champions Manchester United, who are three points off the top of the table, counts against the White Hart Lane outfit.

Jordan, a former United player, said: “Tottenham and City won their last championship in the 1960s so it goes without saying it’s harder (for either of those sides) to win it.

“United, who have come in for a bit of criticism, are where they are not just because they have quality players, they have the knowledge of how to maintain the consistency.

“They can look back many times and know they have done it. That comes by having success in winning a championship.”

Walker goals help South East to successive regional titles

Published on Tuesday 31 January 2012 01:56

FOOTBALL: Bathgate Academy’s Alyshia Walker grabbed two goals and helped South East retain the under-15 Inter Regional Cup with a 4-2 win over West in the final at Toryglen in Glasgow.

Leah Tweedie (Beeslack High School) and Brogan Anderson (Hawick High School) completed the scoring for the defending champions, while Megan Mason (Eastbank Academy) got both of the West goals.

Following the match, all four scorers were named in the 36-strong squad for this Friday’s final trial for the Lloyds TSB Scottish team to take part in the extended Bob Docherty Cup in Ireland in Dublin in April.

Scotland, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales will be joined for a first time by England and the Netherlands.

Walker was the second youngest of the South East team coached by Ronnie Hamilton – Trinity Academy’s Jamie Lee Smith is only 12 – and she has already made a mark on the Scottish game. She captained the Fauldhouse Foxes to victory in last year’s Scottish Youth Challenge Cup – and then suffered heartache when she was banned from playing for the otherwise all boys’ side in a Cup event in England because she was a girl.

Last season was also blighted by injury – hip, back and ankle ligament damage – but it also included a huge boost when she was signed by Celtic.

“It’s really great playing for Celtic,” said the West Lothian youngster. “I train Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays and it is more of a challenge because I am playing at under-17 level.”

Mason also played for Celtic for a couple of years, but has now switched to Rangers and has her sights set even higher.

“In the future, my ambition is to play for one of the really big clubs such as Arsenal Ladies,” she said.

The final was a great showpiece for the girls’ game. Not only was there an array of talent on display, but equally notable was the lack of fouls and theatrical diving.

But the silky skills were not quite matched by the standard of the players’ kit. Both teams were wearing SFA strips and the West team definitely came off second best. The shorts were almost down to their ankles and so voluminous that the players looked as though they could have windsurfed down the Clyde. In fact, on a windy January morning, it was perhaps just as well that the final was played indoors.

Make Consistent Contact With Your Irons

So, check your grips routinely for wear and tear, and/or any loss of tackiness. Furthermore, make sure your grips are fitted properly for both your hands and your golf swing. Typically, smaller grips are better for smaller hands, but they also aid in helping the hands rotate through the TaylorMade Rossa Corza Ghost Putter . Fatter grips have the opposite effect, and can actually lessen the rotation of the hands to prevent excessive hooking of the ball. Experiment with different sizes and see what works best for you.

NEUTRALIZE YOUR GRIP PRESSURE
YOU MAY KNOW THE CORRECT HAND POSITION, but how many times have you considered how tight or soft you should grip the club? In reality, it depends on both your natural grip strength and how well you set the hands at the top of your TaylorMade Rossa Corza Ghost Putter .

To get a better hold of how firmly you should grip the club, first examine how well your hands are functioning at the top of the swing. In the photo above, you can see that the back of my left hand is flat, the clubshaft is on plane (it's hidden behind my hands), and my wrists are fully hinged. Now, if I grip the club too firmly, my wrists won't hinge enough, meaning I'm likely to release the hands too soon through the downswing.

If I grip the club too softly, not only am I likely to regrip and lose the proper TaylorMade Rossa Corza Ghost Putterposition, but my swing plane is going to suffer, since the shaft is likely to droop behind or in front of my hands.

SWING DOWN THE FIRST CUT
A GREAT WAY TO check the direction of your swing path is to take a few practice swings along the first cut of rough. With the clubhead positioned just inside the first cut (the toe barely touching the rough), you'll be able to quickly see whether or not you're swinging down the line, too much inside-out, or as the small photo above shows, too much outside-in. You can even use a tee to get a better idea of where you want to make impact with the turf.

Another great swing thought to have is to try to swing the TaylorMade Rossa Corza Ghost Putter par-allel to the line midway through the backswing, and again, parallel through the line midway through the downswing. You can see here, I'm almost perfectly parallel on the downswing, the toe of the club is pointing up, and my body is rotated through. I've definitely swung straight down the line here.

Striker Lacny in Tannadice loan move

Published on Tuesday 31 January 2012 00:50

DUNDEE United have confirmed the signing of Slovakian striker Milos Lacny on a 12-month loan deal, subject to international clearance.

The 23-year-old joins the Tannadice club from Czech Liga leaders Sparta Prague.

United have first option to buy the player within the timescale and manager Peter Houston said: “Milos is a quality young player. His style is different to the strikers we already have at the club and I think he will quickly become a favourite with our fans.

“He showed a desire to come over here on trial and what I witnessed convinced me that he can play a big part in our squad and gives us greater attacking options.

“He will bring pace to our forward line and increases our goal threat. I am absolutely delighted to have secured his services for the next 12 months.”

United chairman Stephen Thompson said: “We had to work hard to ensure this transfer went through.

“Once Peter decided he wanted to bring Milos to the club, it was imperative that we worked swiftly.

“Milos is exactly the kind of player we are looking to bring to Tannadice. He is an excellent young player who knows he can progress his career by signing for Dundee United, whilst helping us achieve our aims on the pitch.”

Lacny, who has been capped at under-21 level by Slovakia on eight occasions, was part of the Sparta squad which won the Czech Liga in 2009/10 season and also played in the 2010/11 Czech Super Cup victory.

He recently spent six months on loan at SK Slovan Bratislava where he scored two Europa league goals in a 3-2 victory over FC Salzburg in December 2011, before heading over to Tannadice for a week-long trial.

United have also taken Polish goalkeeper Radoslaw Cierzniak on trial. The 28-year-old joined up with the squad for training yesterday. He is a free agent after leaving Cypriot side Alki Larnaca so any deal to bring him to Tannadice does not need to be completed by tonight’s transfer deadline.

The six-footer has picked up one cap for his country, against Lithuania in 2009.

Dalglish says Carroll staying put

Published on Tuesday 31 January 2012 01:10

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish tried to put an end to speculation about striker Andy Carroll’s future after stressing there will be no transfer movement in or out of the club in the current window.

The Reds’ £35 million record signing has become the focal point of much speculation after enduring a difficult first year at Anfield following his move from Newcastle. Having been linked with a highly unlikely cut-price return to the Magpies, reports emerged at the weekend which claimed Manchester City had turned down an offer to swap Carroll for their wantaway striker Carlos Tevez.

Ahead of tonight’s Premier League clash at Wolves, Dalglish, a staunch defender of the England man, refused to comment on speculation but categorically stated there would be no activity at Anfield before tonight.

“There is no-one going in or out the club before the window [closes],” said the Scot. “I don’t read the papers so I don’t know [about speculation] but we have covered what we have to say. We don’t need to justify what people are speculating about, do we?”

Rangers 4 - 0 Hibernian: Sone Aluko comes to fore in Ibrox stroll

By STUART BATHGATE at IBROX
Published on Monday 30 January 2012 01:20

THE loss of Steven Naismith to injury remains the defining moment of Rangers’ season so far, and the potential departure of Nikica Jelavic threatens to have a similar effect on what is left of their campaign.

But the acquisition of Sone Aluko, apparently no more than a makeweight when he joined, is taking on a significance which is at least beginning to counterbalance the contribution made by those two players.

Aluko’s ability to pose a threat from out wide was a factor in Ally McCoist’s signing him, as it meant he could fill a similar role to Naismith. On Saturday, however, with Jelavic absent because of injury, the manager played him in a more central role, and he weighed in with the pass which produced Rangers’ first goal and a fine direct free-kick for their third.

When McCoist claimed just a couple of weeks after signing him that Aluko had already become a valuable player, the remark was perhaps more an attempt to boost the player’s confidence than an accurate assessment of his worth. If so, it seems to have worked, as the 22-year-old is now showing the self-belief which was often missing at Aberdeen.

The fact he has better players around him at Ibrox is a help, of course, as was in this game the inept performance of the Hibernian defence. James McPake, given the captain’s armband on his debut for the Edinburgh club, made their back four look more solid, and was unfortunate to be sent off 20 minutes from the end for a second yellow card. But he had unnecessarily put himself under pressure by collecting a first booking after only six minutes, when he pulled back Aluko after an elusive turn by the Rangers player.

Tom Soares, the other player signed on loan by Hibs last week, was given a wide midfield role, where he struggled to become involved. He might have been used to more effect in the middle of the park, where, as McCoist said later, Steven Davis and Maurice Edu soon became dominant.

“I thought our two central midfielders were outstanding, which allowed Aluko to play as well,” he stated. “I thought he did very well first half in that wee area behind the striker, and in the second half when we brought him out on the right-hand side he was equally good.

“He’s certainly a crowd-pleaser and he’s not just talented, he’s brave. That’s important for somebody of his size, because often boys of that size will get kicked and bullied off the ball and not really fancy it.

“But he takes it and continues to get fouled to get us free-kicks in dangerous areas, then always comes back again. He’s been a breath of fresh air.”

McCoist also rightly acknowledged that his defence had been below their best, and on another day could have been punished for some lapses. Not long after McPake’s initial booking, for instance, they were caught flat-footed by a Soares pass, and only some hesitation by Eoin Doyle allowed Kyle Bartley to get back and block.

Playing up front on his own because of the suspensions of Leigh Griffiths and Garry O’Connor, Doyle struggled to make an impact. Ivan Sproule was more of a threat from wide left, but he and his team-mates lacked the quality needed to convert the few chances they created into goals.

The difference in the abilities of the teams was highlighted most glaringly midway through the first half.

At one end, Spoule broke up the left and cut into the box, but Allan McGregor eventually mopped up the danger. At the other, just 30 seconds or so later, a pass from Aluko found Davis, who carried on into the box before coolly slotting his shot low past Mark Brown. There had not been much between the teams in the first half, but Hibs’ inability to make their half-chances count meant that a second goal would be the end of their hopes of going home with a point. That goal duly arrived less than ten minutes into the second half, when Sean O’Hanlon was short with a back-header to Brown, and amidst the confusion David Healy was able to slot home from 15 yards.

O’Hanlon was substituted not long after that howler, and then Hibs lost McPake for an aerial challenge on Edu which was harshly deemed to merit a booking. Aluko scored direct from the free-kick, and Rangers were able to stroll through the remainder of the game.

McCoist, who had already brought Mervan Celik off the bench for his debut with the score at 2-0, threw Salim Kerkar on for the final dozen minutes. Neither man did anything too notable, though, and it was left to Davis to complete the scoring in stoppage time when a pass from Lee Wallace found him on the right of the box and he shot home off the far post.

With Celtic inactive, the convincing win returned Rangers to within a point of the top while Hibs remain a point off the bottom, their only consolation coming from Dunfermline’s failure to take anything from their game against Aberdeen.

HIBERNIAN thought they could see the light at the end of the tunnel after their back-to-back wins in Fife earlier this month, but it has since been shown up as a false dawn.

Writing Secrets of Prolific Authors

Isaac Asimov, one of the big three science fiction writers of the twentieth century, published over 500 books including novels, short story collections and non fiction, making him one of the most prolific writers of all time.
Asked by Writer's Digest magazine for the secret to his prolific writing, Asimov said:
"I guess I'm prolific because I have a simple and straightforward style."
~Isaac Asimov (500 books)
Could it really be that easy?
Write clearly, in a conversational voice

Writing clearly, in a simple and straightforward style allows you to write fast.
At the same time, when you write fast, you don't stop to process your thoughts . You put them straight onto the page, in a simple and straightforward style.
Best of all, writing clearly should be the goal of every writer. Clarity is the cardinal rule of nonfiction writing, and it will almost always improve your fiction.
Write fast, and you'll have a conversational tone. You're writing as fast as you can put the words together, just like when you're speaking. This gives your words power and immediacy, engaging the reader.
Literary critics dismissed Asimov's writing as colorless, with functional dialogue and a transparent style. Readers disagreed, buying his books in the millions.
In response to the critics, towards the end of this life, Asimov wrote:
"I made up my mind long ago to follow one cardinal rule in all my writing--to be clear. I have given up all thought of writing poetically or symbolically or experimentally, or in any of the other modes that might (if I were good enough) get me a Pulitzer prize. I would write merely clearly and in this way establish a warm relationship between myself and my readers, and the professional critics--Well, they can do whatever they wish."
~Isaac Asimov (500 books)
Try to get your first draft down in 5-10 minutes

Writing fast improves your motivation to write. If you know you've only got to sit down for five minutes to get a draft down, you're more likely to sit at your desk and put pen to paper.
When you're writing a first draft of a blog post, article, or scene, try to get your first draft down in five minutes.
Sean Platt, author of "How to Write an Article in Less Than 20 Minutes" has published 11 books in the past nine months. He sets the following exercise:
"Get a timer and set it for five minutes. Think of a topic and write three prompts, these can be as short as a word or as long as a question. Start writing. Don't stop until the timer goes off. Now read over what you wrote. Your writing is better than you thought it would be, right?
"This won't seem easy until it finally is, but it will happen almost immediately. Again, don't concern yourself with quality. You can always go back and edit, though you won't need to clean up nearly as much as you think."
~Sean Platt (11 books since March 2011)
Start with a question

Choosing a question to write from is the key to writing fast. Get down the question, then focus on writing the answer. No need to edit as you go, just write, as though you were giving your best possible answer to a friend.
How do you come up with a question? If you're writing a how-to article, make it the question you'll be answering. How do I find a holiday home in the Algave? How do I get an Angling license for the Grand Union Canal? How do I train a dog to sit on command? The more specific the question, the better.
If you're writing fiction, use the story question for your scene. Or choose three words as the pith of your scene, and write from there.
Use established structures and plots

When you start writing fast, use established structures for the form you're writing in. Writing what you enjoying reading will help here (Asimov read science fiction from the age of 10).
As you learn to write fast in an established structure, you will gain the knowledge and experience you need to create your own structures and plots.
Romance novelist Barbara Cartland holds the Guiness World Record for the most novels written in a single year, having written 23 novels in 1983. She says:
"You can't lose if you give them handsome highwaymen, duels, 3-foot fountains and whacking great horses and dogs all over the place."
~Barbara Cartland (280 books)
Treat your writing as a craft

Anyone who knows how to do something well can work faster than those who are still learning. Devote time to learning writing skills. Read books and blogs about writing. Attend writing classes. Apply what you've learned to you writing. The more you learn, the faster you'll be able to write.
Writing is a craft, so take time to edit after you write.
"I have always tried to write in a simple way, using down-to-earth and not abstract words." ~ Georges Simenon (500 books)
Know your motivation for writing - and keep it with you as your write

You will only write if you enjoy writing.
Writing fast makes writing more enjoyable. Rather than wrenching out words, you let them flow from your fingers.
Knowing why you write will also increase your motivation. Do you love telling stories? Do you want to earn a living as a writer? Are you driven by the search for truth? Or is fame the name of your game?
Whatever your reason for writing, even if you have mixed motives, search it out, and keep it close. It will come in handy on those days when you need an extra boost to get you sitting at your writing desk.
"Infatuated, half through conceit, half through love of my art, I achieve the impossible working as no one else ever works."
~ Alexandre Dumas (277 books)
Write Every Day

When you're motivated, you'll write every day. When you write every day, you'll increase your motivation to write.
Some writers find they lose momentum if they don't write every day. Others find it better to take a break from writing every so often. I find I lose energy to write if I don't let myself take a break from writing one or two days a week. I usually take my break at the weekend.
"How many words a day do I write? Between six and seven thousand. And how many hours does that take? Three on a good day, as high as thirteen on a bad one"
~ John Creasey (564 books)
Never Give Up

Children's writer Enid Blyton published over 700 books. Like Asimov, she was criticised for her simple, earnest style.
Her writing was an immediate hit with the British public, yet BBC executives banned her work from being dramatized for radio from the 1930s to the 1950s, describing her style as "stilted and longwinded".
Blyton continued to write and publish books until her death in 1968.
"The best way to treat obstacles is to use them as stepping-stones. Laugh at them, tread on them, and let them lead you to something better."
~ Enid Blyton (753 books)
In the decade up to 2010, she remained in the top-ten best selling authors, with sales of nearly 8 million copies in the UK worth £31 million ($48 million).
How Much Do You Need to Write?

To write 100 books (75,000 words per book) over the next 30 years, you need to be writing 1,000 words per day (writing 5 days a week, 50 weeks per year). At a brisk but comfortable pace, that's an hour a day.
If you want to write 100 books in the next 10 years, that's 3,000 words a day.
Being prolific is closer to possible than you might have believed.

Exit for Libya as Zambians march on

Published on Monday 30 January 2012 01:42

A BRACE from Al Busaifi Ihaab was not enough to send Libya through to the knockout stages of the African Nations Cup.

Marcos Paqueta’s men needed to win their Group A game against Senegal and hope Equatorial Guinea beat Zambia. Athough Ihaab’s double ensured a 2-1 victory, Zambia’s 1-0 win ensured it was nothing more than a proud farewell for Libya.

They and Senegal – who equalised through Deme N’Diaye – are both now out, with much-fancied Senegal leaving pointless.

Libya started well and got off to the perfect start, scoring in the fifth minute. However the lead was shortlived with N’Diaye nodding home Niang’s ninth-minute corner.

Senegal’s Souleymane Camara then saw his shot brilliantly saved by Samir Abod before his cross found Pape Malickou Diakhate whose header was also saved.

That was the last meaningful action until the hour mark, when Libya, searching for a second goal, saw Ahmed Zuway’s strike blocked. Mohamed El Moghrabi then found Abdalah Al Sherif but he missed the target while Papiss Cisse shot over the bar.

Libya’s second goal finally arrived with six minutes remaining as Zuway cushioned a long ball into the path of the onrushing Ihaab and he volleyed it into the bottom corner.

Senegal tried to level again but time was not on their side and Libya held on.

Alan Pattullo: Heavy traffic on trialists’ trail up to Murray Park

Pawel Brozek has opted to join Celtic ahead of Rangers. Picture: Getty

Pawel Brozek has opted to join Celtic ahead of Rangers. Picture: Getty

Published on Monday 30 January 2012 01:32

NO wonder Sir David Murray’s visit to Murray Park caused such a stooshie last week. Finally, a face someone recognised had swept in through the gates of the Rangers training centre.

It’s been a long, hard transfer window for Ally McCoist. And it’s been a bewildering one for the person on sentry duty at Murray Park. Already this year he’s been asked to wave through a number of unfamiliar gentlemen clutching boot bags under their arms. This group has included hopefuls hailing from Honduras to Nigeria, from Estonia to Bosnia.

Some among this selection of trialists have proved decent enough. Rangers, however, have refused to be held to ransom by players clearly scenting a bit of panic at a club with an urgent need to strengthen. This is one of the many issues associated with venturing out into the transfer market at this time.

Zlatan Muslimovic, a striker from Bosnia, barely had time to write his name in the visitors’ book before he had taken off again for Sunderland, in what was a clear example of why it is undesirable to have to go shopping for footballers at this time of year. Few of these players will be bothered about scruples. Players, even more so than normal, are out for themselves having been driven to despair by what has often been an unhappy situation at the club from which they are looking to escape. Those who are not even affiliated to a club bring their own problems – such as why are they not affiliated to a club?

Sir Alex Ferguson has made the point that January is no time to be making signings in the hope that it might ignite a club’s season. Players of real quality are simply not available – and why should they be? Few clubs want to be rid of players they feel can make a difference in the final months of a campaign unless forced to due to financial expediency, as in the case with Rangers and Nikica Jelavic. Instead, those required by circumstances to investigate the slim choice on offer have to pick out the best of a bad bunch from a carousel of often damaged goods.

Rangers have proved that themselves in the past. At the start of 2003, Alex McLeish signed Emerson in the hope he might fill the void left by Barry Ferguson. Egil Ostenstad was picked up in the same month. Even last January they caused eyebrows to be raised with the hour-of-the-wolf capture of El Hadji Diouf. Supporters of the player argue that he helped Rangers clinch a title, although the Senegalese forward was far from Inverness at the defining moment of the season – Celtic’s defeat at the Caledonian stadium.

McCoist plainly has no choice but to run his finger down the list of currently available players. He is desperate, hence the creation of a new path – the Trialists’ trail – on the outskirts of Milngavie. With Jelavic now looking set to move to Everton, the need for a replacement is obvious. Indeed, Rangers’ season could well ride on it. But such panicked circumstances do not tend to lend themselves to shrewd choices.

Rangers are casting a line around Europe and as so often happens, it has become entangled with Celtic’s. It seems extraordinary that with the entire globe and hundreds of thousands of footballers to choose from, the gaze of both Old Firm clubs has again managed to fall on the same prey. It’s not as if Pawel Brozek would have been easy to find, either. He has been playing only rarely in the north Turkish Black sea resort of Trabzon, where scouts from both Rangers and Celtic have again bumped into each other with a weary sigh, and greeting of: ‘Not you again’.

Brozek has plumped for Celtic. He perhaps recognises that the club’s moves in the transfer market during this often perilous month for acquiring new players have been made from a position of strength. Such are Celtic’s resources, Neil Lennon didn’t need to sign anyone. He has done so in case injury or suspension befalls one of his principal strikers already at the club. Brozek is, in short, a luxury addition, and that realisation won’t make McCoist feel any less scunnered.

McCoist did his best to sound unconcerned by this development after his side’s impressive 4-0 win over Hibs on Saturday. But it’s a blow not just to his hopes of signing a replacement for Jelavic, but also to the club’s sense of prestige at a time when their image is taking a fearful pounding. He can, though, comfort himself with one thought. The last time Rangers came to head-with-Celtic over a transfer target they lost out in the chase again. Yet Kris Commons has since been reduced to the status of cameo player at Celtic. And his arrival, at this stage last season, did not prove to be the championship-sealing one intended.

TO those of a certain age, Kenny Dalglish can do little wrong. Perhaps the Scot believes that he can trade on this indulgence for evermore.

Banished Pressley full of pride at his side’s display as Lennon lauds Stokes’ striking instinct

Published on Monday 30 January 2012 01:04

FALKIRK manager Steven Pressley found himself watching the second half of yesterday’s Scottish Communities League Cup from the stand, after remonstrating with referee Euan Norris at the end of the first half.

Pressley was furious about the penalty decision against Falkirk defender Darren Dods, which allowed Scott Brown to open the scoring for Celtic from the spot.

But the former Scotland defender was contrite after the game, saying: “I am not proud of what happened at half-time, far from it. “I am a passionate manager and passionate about my players but I have to keep my emotions in check at times.

“I was just disappointed with some decisions that had a big impact on the game.

“I’ve not seen it so I’m not going to say it wasn’t a penalty but I just ask you the question: would it have been given in the other box?

“I haven’t seen the free-kick which led to the second goal either but my initial feeling was it was soft. But I don’t want that to overshadow our performance.

“I want to read about how well my team played. What a performance. I am exceptionally proud of my players and I don’t think the result was a true reflection of the game. On the balance of play I think we merited a result.”

After his side’s 3-1 win at Hampden, Celtic manager Neil Lennon confirm the capture of Polish striker Pawel Brozek on loan from Turkish side Trabzonspor for the rest of the season.

Lennon has spoken of wanting to bring in a taller target man although he professed himself pleased with the strikers at his disposal yesterday, particularly Anthony Stokes, who has now scored 17 times this season thanks to his brace against the Bairns.

“I had a chat with him on Friday,” said Lennon. “I am pleased with his goal return but he needs to smarten up on his play in general.

“And I got all that from him today. He has a natural instinct for scoring. But to play here you need more than just an ability to chip in with a goal here and there. I want him to be a good team player – and I thought he was excellent today.

“Falkirk played well in the game but if you look alone at the chances we had, we’ve hit the bar twice, we've hit the post and we missed two one-on-ones, [Thomas] Rogne has had a free header from four or five yards out and missed that, so in terms of chances we were well on top.

“I had to rely on my goalkeeper to make a double save at 2-1 but apart from that I thought we controlled the majority of the game.”

Lennon added: “I know Steven might have complained about the penalty but Thomas Rogne said Dods had his arms around him but for me we scored a good goal and it was chalked off.

“I think Gary Hooper was onside so I don’t think they could make too many complaints about the referee.” Lennon reacted to Falkirk’s 40th minute equaliser by replacing Emilio Izaguirre, who has recently returned from a broken ankle, with Ki Sung Yueng at half-time.

Izaguirre had been caught out of position for Jay Fulton’s 40th-minute goal.

“He [Izaguirre] looked a bit off the game,” said Lennon. “It’s not a major concern but he needs to get up to match speed.

“The only way he can do that is by playing. But he needs to find his rhythm again. At the minute he looks a bit off it.”

THE dark blue shirts might have prompted flashbacks to a certain day at the same venue in 2010, but Celtic ensured there was no repeat of that grim afternoon against another set of First Division opponents.

Terry-Ferdinand handshake issue set to rumble on

Published on Monday 30 January 2012 01:39

QPR and Chelsea would need to seek permission if they want to cancel the pre-match handshake when the sides next meet in April, the Premier League confirmed yesterday.

Anton Ferdinand was spared having to shake John Terry’s hand in Saturday’s FA Cup clash at Loftus Road – which Chelsea won 1-0 – after the Football Association gave their blessing to a request for the entire ritual to be abandoned.

QPR manager Mark Hughes admitted the FA may have been contacted by both clubs after some of his players indicated they would join Ferdinand in snubbing Terry.

Ferdinand reportedly spent the week agonising over whether to accept the hand of Terry, who is charged with racially abusing his fellow defender during October’s league game. Terry is expected to instruct his legal team to enter a not-guilty plea when the court case into the matter begins on Wednesday. A trial date will then be set, meaning the matter could remain unresolved until after Chelsea host QPR in the league a fortnight before the end of the season.

A Premier League spokesman said yesterday that both clubs would need to seek approval for the handshake to be cancelled again.

Meanwhile, the FA are unlikely to punish QPR after a spectator threw the match ball at the back of Ashley Cole. Referee Mike Dean may include it in his official report but it is doubtful QPR will be sanctioned.

The Benefits of Cycling Performance Testing

As technology drives forward our modern society, it is also responsible for driving forward practically every single sport, and cycling is no exception. While technology can technically be given as the reason behind advancements in bicycles and cycling clothing, when we think of technology we really think of those large computers and machines. The most common way this type of technology has been adopted in the sport of cycling is through cycling performance testing. There are three common tests which are considered the most valuable in cycling performance testing: Lactate Threshold, Conconi, and VO2 Max. The tests are ramped, which means that they are easy to start and get progressively harder, and can generally be completed in less than 30 minutes. Special training apparatus is used to set up these tests and the results can provide assistance to cyclists looking to improve their performance. The Conconi test focuses on heart rate, while the Lactate Threshold combines the heart rate with blood lactate measurements. In the VO2 max test, the heart rate is measured in combination with oxygen uptake and utilisation. The data from these three tests is then compared against other test results, and these can be from either the general public, other cyclists, or if it is not your first cycling performance test - your previous test results. The test results can give a cyclist a valuable insight into their performance, and what steps must be taken to improve their physiology. A riders strengths and flat spots can be determined, and can highlight areas that need to be worked on with specific training programs. With test results in hand, a rider can compare themselves against the results from other riders. It is especially interesting to see the results of elite cyclists, as it paints a clear picture of the levels that need to be achieved to be successful. Most riders who undertake cyclist performance testing will usually follow-up and test themselves at least every year, with some riders preferring to repeat the tests every few months. The results will let a cyclist know if they are becoming fitter, or if they have suffered a lapse. More importantly, they can determine the effectiveness of their cycling training program, and make adjustments if necessary. The testing can also prove beneficial with goal setting. Instead of a rider solely targeting racing goals, if they can set fitness objectives then this will naturally result in improved race results too.Statistics show that cyclists who undergo performance testing regularly show a greater improvement than those who test infrequently. The numerous benefits mentioned above are invaluable for a cyclist, regardless of whether they are an amateur racer or professional cyclist. Apart from wearing a state of the art customised cycling jersey, if you want a valuable edge of your rivals then cycling performance testing might be what you are looking for.

It is especially interesting cycling clothing to see the results of elite cyclists, as it paints a clear picture of the levels that need to be achieved to be successful.

HENRIK Ojamaa cannot think of a reason why he would not extend his stay at Motherwell after making a flying start to his career at Fir Park.

The 20-year-old scored twice as Motherwell defeated St Johnstone to move six points ahead of fourth-placed Hearts in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

The Estonian striker opened the scoring midway through the first-half before Jody Morris levelled on the stroke of half-time. Ojamaa restored the hosts’ lead after 65 minutes and Keith Lasley doubled their advantage ten minutes later with a fantastic drive from 25 yards.

Francisco Sandaza netted from the penalty spot with nine minutes remaining but Motherwell held out for an important three points.

“We have taken seven points from a possible nine, so it has been a good week for everyone, not just myself,” said Ojamaa, who has signed for Well until the end of the season. “I am really happy here and with how things have gone so far – I don’t see any reason why I wouldn’t stay here. I think Motherwell could be a good place for me to settle as the older players and the manager [Stuart McCall] will help me improve and develop as a player.

“The tempo is good and the players are in very good shape. That’s the kind of football I like and I am enjoying it.”

After netting twice against Saints, Ojamaa has now scored three times in his last two starts for Motherwell. Despite his impressive strike rate, the former Derby forward insists there is more to his game than goals.

“Of course it would be great to add scoring goals on a regular basis to my game but I am still going to work hard on creating chances for others. I am not the type of player who only scores goals,” he said.

“Every game I go out and try to do well for the team and I think it is a combination of how the team plays and the other players helping me that has helped me show the best side of my game.”

St Johnstone manager Steve Lomas was disappointed after his seeing his side miss their chance to move level with Motherwell. The visitors controlled long spells of the match at Fir Park but were unable to make their superiority count.

“I thought we totally dominated the second-half,” he said. “It was one-way traffic and we looked pretty comfortable. You have to score when you are on top, though, and, unfortunately, Motherwell punished us on the counter. In terms of chances we can consider ourselves mightily unlucky.”

Falkirk 1 - 3 Celtic: Harsh on Falkirk as nervy Celts scrape through

By ALAN PATTULLO at HAMPDEN PARK
Published on Monday 30 January 2012 01:03

THE dark blue shirts might have prompted flashbacks to a certain day at the same venue in 2010, but Celtic ensured there was no repeat of that grim afternoon against another set of First Division opponents.

Jay Fulton’s goalscoring performance for Falkirk was another blast from the past. His strike, a sweetly-executed left-foot shot of which his father, Steve, would have been proud, drew his side level just before half-time.

Perhaps Falkirk’s chief regret following a highly-creditable performance is that they could not remain on level terms for longer than 11 minutes after the re-start.

This was a day when Celtic flirted with ignominy. It was all nervy enough to bring our the worst in Neil Lennon, who exchanged words with Alex Smith, Falkirk’s veteran assistant manager, on the sidelines, after Anthony Stokes had put Celtic 2-1 ahead with a free-kick. “These things happen,” said Lennon later. “They were contesting every decision. I had a few words with him.”

It was as revealing as it was unedifying, though the pair did shake hands in amiable enough fashion at the end. Celtic were given a run for their money here by Falkirk, who cursed a combination of bad luck and poor finishing. Their manager, Steven Pressley, will wish to throw erratic officiating into the mix, too, although Celtic suffered from this as well. Fulton scored once and could have had another at the start of the second-half, blazing over after good work by Kallum Higginbotham. Pressley had watched the first-half unfold from his position at the edge of the technical area. Like a clucking mother hen, he proudly watched over his brood.

At no point did he cluck more loudly than when the teams came off at half-time. Pressley had been infuriated by the decision of Euan Norris to award Celtic a penalty midway through the first-half, and let the referee know it. By the time the teams re-emerged after the interval Pressley was in a position to clap his players on to the park, having taken a seat in the stand.

This, we learned later, came at the invitation of Norris, who considered the manager’s outburst to be over the top. He spent the second-half writing notes down to his coaching staff on the bench below.

Celtic mis-directed passes and looked generally out of sorts at the start. Falkirk, meanwhile, began where they left off at Hampden in the Scottish Cup final of 2009, when they nearly succeeded in passing Rangers off the park. Their possession play was often a joy to behold here again. Indeed, it was they rather than Celtic who excelled in this department in the initial stages.

Falirk boasted the livelier players, and in Higginbotham had the outstanding performer on the field. Mark Millar directed his side’s play, often via long, accurate balls out to the Falkirk right. Rather than be cowed by the open spaces of Hampden, the First Division team revelled in the opportunity to stretch the play.

They did, though, survive some close calls before Scott Brown put Celtic ahead from the spot after 27 minutes. The same player had already hit the post with a drive. Although the ball did eventually end up in the net, Gary Hooper was penalised for offside.

It was the first of a series of calls which infuriated both managers. The striker, television pictures proved, had been very much onside. Pressley wasn’t outraged by this, naturally. But he was driven to rage by the referee’s award of a penalty to Celtic, after Falkirk skipper Darren Dods had tangled with Thomas Rogne as they duelled to get on the end of a Charlie Mulgrew corner kick.

Pressley’s gripe was that Falkirk would not have gained from a similar incident at the other end, but Norris did have a good view of what was a clumsy-looking challenge on Dods’ part. He was booked and then watched on as Brown made no mistake from the spot, with the Celtic skipper having promoted himself to the role of penalty-taker.

Dods redeemed himself with an important block from Stokes just minutes later. Just five minutes before half-time, Falkirk grabbed the goal their play deserved. It stemmed from the self-belief of David Weatherston, who beat Cha Du Ri in a race for the ball. Higginbotham then took over, driving towards the box before releasing Fulton with a perfectly-weighted pass. The midfielder took advantage of the space left by the out-of-position Emilio Izaguirre and nervelessly beat the on-rushing Fraser Forster with a low shot into the corner.

The Falkirk youngsters had excelled. Given Rangers’ present financial struggles, the sight of Murray Wallace, a rangy, ball-playing centre-half, strolling around Hampden must have been an extra reason for anguish. Falkirk are loooking forward to pocketing £300,000 for the player, courtesy, most probably, of Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Ibrox side let him go, fearing that he would not bulk-up enough to make the grade. Judging by yesterday’s peformance, he has all the attributes required – including physique. He was, though, fallible, letting in James Forrest on the stroke of half-time. Fortunately for Wallace his goalkeeper pulled off a fine save. Rogne also missed badly at the far post following a Brown free-kick.

Going in all-square at the interval was the least Falkirk deserved. But in order to prosper, they needed to hold what they had for longer than they managed. Farid El Alagui failed to make an impact where he hoped – in the Celtic box. But the striker did contribute to a significant moment in the game. He was penalised for climbing on Victor Wanyama and though the offence seemed fairly innocuous, the punishment was severe.

Stokes managed to curl the ball over the Falkirk wall from the free-kick, and saw it land in the corner of the net - just out of the diving Michael McGovern’s reach. Rogne had already hit the bar after a good old-fashioned Hampden stramash in the box, so Falkirk had been living on the edge even before Stokes’ strike.

Celtic had to rely on a fine double-save by Forster to preserve the lead. The ’keeper blocked a Dods effort before then spreading himself to prevent Stewart Murdoch from taking advantage of the rebound.

The prospect of extra time was extinguished four minutes from the end when Hooper nipped past Wallace. His cross from the bye-line was then bundled into the empty net by Stokes. Celtic had created plenty of chances but it still felt harsh on Falkirk.

FALKIRK manager Steven Pressley found himself watching the second half of yesterday’s Scottish Communities League Cup from the stand, after remonstrating with referee Euan Norris at the end of the first half.

Aberdeen 1 - 0 Dunfermline: Resurgent Dons clamber into top six for the first time this season

Published on Monday 30 January 2012 01:08

ABERDEEN, despite being some way off their best on Saturday, continued an impressive resurgence which has carried them from joint-bottom of the SPL into the top six in the space of just over two months.

The Pittodrie side looked in deep trouble as they languished at the foot of the pile alongside Inverness towards the end of November. However, after Scott Vernon’s winner against Dunfermline on Saturday helped make it seven in a row unbeaten, Craig Brown’s men crept into the top half for the first time this season and are now looking up rather than down.

Indeed, having lost only one of their last ten, the Dons are now a healthy 12 points clear of Saturday’s visitors Dunfermline, who remain rooted to the foot of the table and seemingly scrapping it out with Hibs in a relegation battle which Aberdeen looked like becoming embroiled in earlier in the season.

The latest win was far from spectacular, as acknowledged by Vernon, who capitalised on an error by Pars goalkeeper Iain Turner to net the only goal of the game and take his tally for the season to 10.

The Dons top-scorer said: “It was an awful game. We didn’t play too well and it was hard to get to grips with the game. We got the points in the end and I suppose that is the important thing. We just want to keep progressing and keep this unbeaten run going as long as we can. We knew this was a massive game as it could propel us into the top six. We are happy to get into the top half of the table, although we know we can play much better.”

Vernon is disappointed that Icelandic midfielder Kari Arnason has rejected an improved contract offer to remain at Pittodrie after his current deal expires at the end of the season. However, the former Colchester man has no doubts that Arnason will continue to give his all until the end of the season. He added: “We don’t talk about it too much in the dressing-room because we have a job to do but obviously you hear things on the radio and in the press. He is a good player and has had a really good influence on us as a team. It is his prerogative to do as he pleases and we can’t blame the lad. There is no doubt that if he stays he will put in 100 per cent every game. He is that type of lad.”

Vernon is hoping Craig Brown manages to secure a loan deal to bring Nigerian striker Danny Uchechi, who has been on trial with the Dons, to the club. He added: “He is the type of player that we haven’t got. He can play as a winger and dribbles a bit more than the players we have. He has good feet and good skills and I’m sure he will be a good addition if he stays.”

Dunfermline manager Jim McIntyre refused to be too downhearted after his side lose for the fourth time in five matches. He said: “Not taking chances has been our Achilles heel this season. But you have to credit the players as they kept going. I thought the back four were excellent. There was a lot of pleasing aspects we can take out of the game but the bottom line is we have taken no points, which is disappointing.”

Sunderland 1 - 1 Middlesbrough: Barry Robson’s error sees earlier goal lose its sparkle

Published on Monday 30 January 2012 01:38

BARRY Robson was on the scoresheet for Middlesbrough and picked up the man-of-the-match award, but the former Inverness, Dundee United and Celtic mdifielder was left distraught at the Stadium of Light yesterday after his mistake handed derby rivals Sunderland an FA Cup lifeline.

Robson, whose stunning 16th-minute volley had fired the npower Championship visitors into the lead, played a part in substitute Fraizer Campbell’s 59th-minute equaliser when his loose pass set James McClean away on a pacy counter-attack. Robson’s error did not prevent him being named man of the match at the end of a pulsating fourth-round encounter, but his manager Tony Mowbray revealed that proved little consolation.

Mowbray said of Robson: “He came in and he threw his champagne in the bin. He is a very emotional boy, Barry, and yet he epitomises the spirit required as we as a club move on.

“Particularly in the Championship, you have to fight your corner every minute of every game, and Barry Robson leads from the front in that aspect. He also has a left foot like we have seen. If you were there against Hull a month or so ago, he rifled one in the top corner from 35 yards with his left foot. Today, he scored a great first-time volley. He has the quality, as well as a heart the size of a lion, to help drive us on this season.”

Sunderland were dealt a major blow ahead of kick-off when skipper Lee Cattermole, who made his name as a teenager at Middlesbrough, was ruled out by a hamstring injury, a misfortune which was to prove significant before the break.

Craig Gardner took his place in the middle of the field, but without Cattermole’s bite, the Teessiders were able to prosper as Rhys Williams, Marvin Emnes and Robson, aided when not in possession by Faris Haroun and former Celtic striker Scott McDonald, made life intensely difficult for their counterparts.

The visitors started brightly and Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was relieved to grasp McDonald’s third-minute volley to his chest after it had threatened to squirm from his grasp.

Sunderland gradually worked their way into the game and might have gone ahead seven minutes later, only for Sebastian Larsson to head wastefully wide after Stephane Sessegnon had tricked his way past Robson and crossed from the right.

Middlesbrough had an escape three minutes later when defender Seb Hines headed a David Vaughan corner straight at team-mate Haroun and saw the ball loop over Danny Coyne’s crossbar.

But it was they who took the lead in spectacular style with 16 minutes gone. Emnes made life difficult for defender John O’Shea, captaining Sunderland in Cattermole’s absence, and he could only loop a weak header towards Robson on the left side of the penalty area. The Scot needed no second invitation and unleashed a stinging volley which flew past Mignolet’s despairing dive and into the bottom corner.

The travelling fans behind Coyne’s goal were in raptures, but as the half wore on, it was they who started to see far more of the ball than they would have liked.

Coyne got down well to block McClean’s 23rd-minute shot and was in the right place at the right time to claim the winger’s close-range header seconds later.

However, the game erupted into controversy with six minutes of the half remaining after Sunderland thought they had dragged themselves back into it. Gardner controlled Kieran Richardson’s cross with a hint of handball and fired home off the inside of the far post with striker Connor Wickham watching the ball home at close hand.

But the celebrations were ended abruptly by a flag, and after consulting his assistant, referee Kevin Friend ruled out the effort, apparently for offside against Wickham, despite the fact that he had not intervened.

Speaking afterwards, Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill said: “I have been told it was given for offside, and it wasn’t offside. The referee is adamant that’s what the linesman gave it for. There is supposedly a suggestion of handball beforehand, which I don’t think he saw.

“I said to the referee at half-time, ‘Was it handball or offside?’, and he said, ‘I never mentioned handball’, so if it was given for offside, it should have stood.”

Mowbray was similarly puzzled, if less disappointed, by the referee’s decision. He said: “Martin had a very similar view to me and I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have known what on earth that goal wasn’t given for when he sees the linesman’s flag up.”

Sunderland’s mood might have darkened further on the stroke of half-time when Lukas Jutkiewicz found himself in on goal, but Mignolet saved his initial effort and when Haroun fed the rebound back to him, he fired harmlessly across goal.

Campbell replaced Wickham at the break, although it was Boro who enjoyed the better openings during the early exchanges. Emnes volleyed just wide with 50 minutes gone and Robson curled a free-kick a yard past the post with the visitors refusing to sit on their lead.

The home side’s fortunes took a turn for the worse when defender Wes Brown limped off after landing awkwardly following an aerial challenge with Emnes.

However, the ten men levelled in stunning style as Michael Turner prepared to replace him. McClean ran on to Robson’s poor back-pass before squaring for Campbell, who slipped his shot unerringly past Coyne to send a sigh of relief around the stadium.

O’Neill’s men tore into their opponents as the momentum swang firmly their way, although Boro continued to make a real fight of it.

Play switched rapidly from end to end, but neither side was able to find the killer blow in a rousing finale during which Williams was perhaps fortunate to see yellow rather than red for a wild challenge on Vaughan.

Campbell was making his first senior appearance since August 2010 as a result of two serious knee injuries and the equaliser was his first goal since April 2010. O’Neill added: “I am really, really delighted for him, and I think everybody is around here – it’s hard not to be with the injuries he has sustained. He took it brilliantly as well.”
