Since the BCS' inception in 1998, LSU has won two national championships. The first came after the 2003 season, the second after the 2007 season. Both of those championships were won in New Orleans, where this game will be played.

Alabama won the national championship following the 2009 season, beating Texas.

This will be the fifth consecutive season that an SEC team will win the National Championship. Florida won in 2006 and 2008, LSU in 2007, Alabama in 2009 and Auburn in 2010.

Izzy Gould of the Tuscaloosa Bureau quoted Alabama receiver Brandon Gibson, who seemed optimistic about his team's chances in the rematch vs. LSU.

"We left a lot of points on the field the last time we played...I don't think that they beat us; we beat ourselves. It's all about Alabama right now. We're going back to the basics like we did last week, and we're starting to get into work for LSU. We'll be prepared for them."

Jim Kleinpeter of The Times Picayune wrote that the LSU players and coaches aren't worried about the extended layoff that the Tigers will face.

Everybody already knows about players like Trent Richardson and Tyrann Mathieu, and they are sure to play a major role when the No. 1 LSU Tigers meet the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide in the BCS National Championship Game.

After the national championship game, LSU fans will look forward to national signing day on February 1st. Miles' coaching staff has been putting together another Top 10 recruiting class, but there's still one big fish out there.

Dutchtown's Landon Collins, who is a standout safety and Mr. Football in Louisiana, will announce his verbal commitment on January 5th at the Under Armour All-America Game. Collins is also considering Alabama.

Even if LSU doesn't get Collins, they have a solid class that got better last week when the nation's top-ranked pro-style quarterback, Gunner Kiel, gave his verbal pledge to Miles. Kiel will have a chance to watch and learn as Zach Mettenberger takes over as LSU's starter next season.

Once the football and recruiting season is in the books, there will be a basketball team worth watching. After winning just five conference games the last two seasons, Coach Trent Johnson has a competitive team this year.
