Enjoying a Tennis Holiday ?EUR" Club Med with a Difference

Some people go abroad for their summer holidays to sit beside the pool and top up their tan.

After having endured months of relentless slog in the often dull and dreary climate of the British Isles such an indulgence is easily forgiven. The feel of the warm sun reflecting upon the clear blue Mediterranean Sea is an experience well worth waiting for, and one that makes the weeks and months of toil in anticipation of this brief but wonderful encounter with how it was all meant to be all worthwhile, and worth the pain of living.

Others though like their vacations to be lively, to offer music, dancing, interaction with other holidaymakers and generally to have a great time. And often the excitement and buzz of an active night life is complimented perfectly by a week or two of sport and adventure by day.

The essence of a luxury holiday is that whether one wishes to relax or to soak up the night life or engage in sporting activities, everything one wishes to do is organised and readily available. The stresses of having to source one's enjoyment by going out and hunting it down are conspicuously absent. Everything you desire to do is there for you under one roof, or arranged by those who have been entrusted with the task of making your stay a pleasant and enjoyable one. That is what an all inclusive holiday is all about.

Organisations such as Club Med have flourished over many years by responding to the wishes and the demands of their millions of customers, many of whom return year after year. As the requirements and expectations of holidaymakers have become more sophisticated, so the service on offer has adapted to respond to these demands. For the all inclusive holiday service provider, the art has been to manage the balance between responding to expectations and creating them.

In today's more health conscious age it has become fashionable amongst some resorts to provide gymnasia and other sports amenities for people to use during the day, possibly amongst other things to counteract the negative effects of a week or two of unusually prolific eating and drinking.

One exciting development has been the creation of summer tennis camps, luxury holidays with all the trimmings but with the added attraction of providing tennis workshops for those whose interest it is. Nowadays there is just so much to do for the holidaymaker who wants to enjoy the sun and the thrill and comfort of being away from it all whilst still remaining active.

A 14-team top league is still not enough, says Pressley

Published on Tuesday 27 March 2012 03:45

STEVEN Pressley insists Scottish football is being held back from the change it needs by the demands for four Old Firm games a season.

The Falkirk manager, who turned out for both Rangers and Celtic during his playing career, has welcomed Parkhead chief executive Peter Lawwell’s announcement that his club could support a 14-team SPL.

However, Pressley says such a move would not go far enough and remains steadfast in his belief that a 16 or 18-club top-flight needs to be introduced to safeguard the future of the game and bring fans back.

Pressley said: “It is moving in the right direction but it’s still not where we need to get to. The 14-team league still involves playing opposition teams four times. “Ultimately, the 14-team league, with the eight and six split, still revolves around the four Old Firm games a season. We have to get away from that. Our game in Scotland cannot be driven by four Old Firm games. We must look at the bigger picture.

“We need a bigger league to allow clubs to develop go through transitional periods, where the pressure on the manager isn’t such that he can’t breed young players.

“And, secondly, it’s about the supporters and the demands they make. They pay the money, they want to see a product and I think they want to see a product that doesn’t involve playing the opposition four times.

“We’ve become dependent on TV money and we need to become less dependent on it and more dependent on getting our supporters through the gates.

“That’s the cycle they need to break, and until they address that cycle the supporters will continue to dwindle.

“The TV money isn’t that excessive. If you were to attract more people through your gates the gulf in money isn’t that great.”

SPL clubs to meet in quest to change voting structure

Published on Thursday 22 March 2012 12:00

The SPL will host a special general meeting next month as clubs seek major concessions from the Old Firm.

Ten clubs will demand a change to the voting structure of the top flight in a bid to push through league reconstruction and a more equal split of television revenues.

Currently, an 11-1 majority is required to push through change in the SPL. Now the ten non-Old Firm clubs – keen to bring change following Rangers’ move into administration – want to make that 9-3.

Rangers and Celtic have traditionally formed a block vote to protect their mutual interests and are strongly opposed to the move. Celtic, in particular, will vigorously resist any attempts to change the current set-up.

The Glasgow giants will cite studies which show the two biggest clubs bring 85 per cent of the income to the Scottish top flight and, therefore, wish to preserve the status quo.

Dunfermline chairman John Yorkston confirmed the special general meeting will take place on April 12: “There has been a request for a special meeting and a number of issues are up for discussion. We are looking for more democracy and change – and change is not going to happen if we stand still. This is us trying to get the democracy we would all like to see.”

Rangers retain full voting rights at present, even though they are in administration. It was the Ibrox outfit’s financial collapse which provided the impetus for the recent meeting of the ten clubs in their bid for restructuring.

Although divided as recently as last season over whether a ten or 14-team top flight was the way forward, the ten teams still believe they can present a unified force for change.

Aidan Smith: Bring your own ball, the SPL one’s burst

Published on Sunday 11 March 2012 01:54

THIRTY-nine years ago, the national sport got the big documentary treatment but it was a wholly different affair to the programme screened last week.

In 1973 the mood was one of pride. The domestic game was in good health, Lisbon was still fresh in the memory and the SFA had made it to 100. So my father, football fan and telly producer, was commissed by BBC Scotland to make Bring Your Own Ball. He interviewed Busby, Shankly and Stein, asking of Big Jock: “Are you a disciplinarian?” Some years later, Hugh McIlvanney’s series on the great mining-stock triumvirate used the clip and hearing Dad from beyond the grave made his two sons simultaneously sit bold upright, me in Edinburgh and my brother in Cambridge. We’ve used his probing inquiry as a greeting ever since.

Last week, of course, there was nothing to celebrate. Thus the graphics, in the style of an official stamp, suggested “Condemned” or “Fail”. And you knew it was serious when everyone got called back in the following night to be told there would be extra homework but, before then, a discussion.

Trying to look their best everyone wore a suit and tie, apart from the Kilmarnock fan in an open-necked shirt who said football had gone middle-class and, even at £20, had priced itself beyond the means of the working man with his laddie in the middle of a recession. An overhead microphone was used and the boom cast grim shadows on the suit-cloth. Were the key players aware that it looked as if a giant axe shaft was hovering above their heids? Some may have been shuffling in their seats in an attempt to avoid its swoop and wondering of presenter Rob MacLean: “Are you a disciplinarian?”

But SFA chief executive Neil Doncaster, bold as the brass of the association’s nameplate, said it was all very well if fans wanted an enlarged SPL but that would mean £20 million vanishing from football. Doncaster was responding to Alan Harris of Supporters Direct who was agreeing with Falkirk manager Steven Pressley on the issue of fans going unheard, not least on the reconstruction issue. Nine out of ten fans want a 16 or 18-team top flight, said Harris. But, obviously, an expanded league would have to be competitive. To achieve this there would have to be a redistrubtion of what we can still just about call the game’s wealth. At the moment a third of the total pot at the end of the season – about £5 million – goes to the top two teams and we all know who they usually are, although maybe not this term.

Was I aware of this? I hope I was. And I bet a few of you watching were shocked to discover how simple and deadly arithmetic can be. I wanted this section of the debate to linger on Celtic and Rangers but this didn’t happen. Of course they generate a lot of the wealth, and doubtless the key consequence of reconstruction – a reduction in the ancient Glasgow hostilities by 50 per cent – was what Doncaster meant when he quoted that £20m. But there wasn’t just one elephant in the room here, there were four – one for each of the Old Firm games as things stand. No one was prepared to take them on.

But, elsewhere, there were good points, well made. SFA performance director, Mark Wotte, a plain-speaking Dutchman, said: “I see national team players who cannot use the left foot, cannot dribble. These are basic techniques.” He also described the organisational structure as “unbelievable complicated”. Rod Petrie described the ditching of the reserve league as “shameful”. St Mirren’s Steven Thompson said barging into the same centre-backs four times a season was “boring”. Derek McInnes, pictured, reckoned the First Division was the only league in the world where finishing second earned you precisely nothing.

I probably shouldn’t pick a top man from the debate – the over-emphasis on winning shiny cups is bad for you, don’t you know – but can’t resist mentioning Pressley again. Elvis could be damning: “Clubs are only interested in the short term and what TV money they can get tomorrow.” But, as a keen young manager trusting the kids, he was optimistic, too.

We’re going to be bringing our own ball for a while yet, though.

Kim sets course record at Congressional with 62

BETHESDA, Md.(AP) Anthony Kim is regaining a lot of his strength and a little of his swagger. He can only hope his record start Thursday at the AT&T National will allow him to get rid of some frustration built up from a year of not winning.

Kim ran off eight birdies over his final 13 holes and set the course record at Congressional with an 8-under 62, giving him a two-shot lead over tournament host Tiger Woods and two others.

The 24-year-old Kim has not won since his victory in the AT&T National last year, slowed by an assortment of injuries that caused his game to slip just as he was being anointed the next great American player.

It was the best round of his PGA Tour career, although Kim walked off the par-5 ninth green slightly perturbed after narrowly missing a 10-foot birdie putt. Apparently, eight birdies wasn't enough.

"You don't have many opportunities to bust a 61," Kim said.

But it was enough to hold off Woods, who missed his tournament last year after having season-ending knee surgery. Woods played in the afternoon with deceptive wind swirling from trees lining the fairways. He missed only two fairways and three greens, and made enough putts for a 64, his lowest round since the 2007 Tour Championship.

"Today was nice to get back inside the ropes and get out there and try to catch AK," Woods said. "He lit it up this morning."

Bryce Molder, who can qualify for the British Open with a strong week at Congressional, hit a 3-wood to 4 feet on the par-3 second hole and escaped trouble a few times on the back nine to join a group at 64 that also included D.A. Points.

Former PGA champion Steve Elkington was another shot back on a day of exceptional scoring in relatively soft conditions from overnight rain in the Washington area.

"You can be so aggressive out there," Woods said. "You can fire at a lot of flags. The fairways got wide because it's not going to run out. If you get aggressive and get it going, you can post a number out there."

Three dozen players shots in the 60s, including Jim Furyk in the group at 66 and U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover at 69. Nearly half the 120-man field was at par or better.

As a tournament host, Woods took some solace that 3-under 67 was still good enough to be in the top 10. As a player, he saw Kim at 62 before he teed off and realized he had better stay as close as he could.

"This is the day to pull it off," he said, "because the greens are so soft."

Kim extended his bogey-free streak at Congressional to 40 holes, dating to the third round a year ago. He missed only one green, coming up just short on the 18th and chipping to about 3 feet. The longest par putt he faced all day was from 4 feet.

"Whenever you can make a bunch of birdies and not bogeys to follow it up, it's going to be a good day," Kim said. "And fortunately, I kept the ball in play for most of the day and finally got some putts to fall this year."

Even though it's the first week of July, it already feels like a long year to Kim.

He has not finished in the top 10 since his runner-up finish in the season-opening tournament at Kapalua, as he traveled the world while coping with injuries, the latest to his left thumb. He had to regrip the club on his backswing, making him tentative.

But as the strength returned, Kim has been able to set the club properly and swing more explosively through the ball.

As he worked his way along a rail to sign autographs, Fred Funk looked over at Kim and asked him what he shot. Without looking up, Kim casually told him he had a 62.

Sixty-what?" Funk said, not believing what he heard. "Where did you cut over?"

There were no shortcuts for Kim, and only limited theatrics. Only two of his birdie putts were tap-in range, as Kim played to spots on the green instead of getting locked in on the flag when it didn't make sense.

Not only is Kim feeling healthy, he is getting stronger. Over the last two months, he has been working intensively with Darby Rich, whom he met at Oklahoma and who recently worked with Blake Griffin as the Sooners' basketball trainer.

"He's really focused, almost obsessed," Rich said of Kim's recent devotion to fitness and diet. "The last couple of days, I feel like I've had to tell him to back off. He's really driven to get back to where he was."
